Loss of speedo function

I own a Peugeot boxer 2.00ltr hdi camper 4 years old with only 4,000 miles on the clock. During a recent journey I noticed that the speedo had stopped working.

Took it to my local garage, who told me that a signal was leaving the sender but not getting to the binnacle. This was suggesting a wiring fault and recommended that I take it to a specialist auto-electrician.

This I did and they told me the same story!!

They seem reluctant to investigate this further as I get the feeling that its the time factor involved.

Although the van is very low mileage it is regularly serviced & driven and all the shiny bits are kept shiny.

Since this fault occurred the speedo has worked on 2 occasions but very briefly.

If it is a loom problem I am not very impressed with Peugeot's quality of workmanship.

You do not expect this sort of thing to occur on a van with so little use.

Has anybody else had a similar problem? Or can anyone offer me some advice as I have no confidence in Peugeot main agents and who would probably use a specialist electrician anyway.

This is hopefully not the case with your van, BUT: some friends of ours had the same problem in that their speedo stopped working whilst touring Scotland. Took it in, to a garage at first, who didn't seem to be very interested and then said the gearbox needed to come out. So they refused then took it to a local dealer.

It appears that the cause in their case is.....vermin, which have had a good chew at some of the wiring! The van is still in dock at the moment, as the dealer is now going through all the wiring to see which other bits of wiring, if any, are also damaged.

Problem is, the van is nearly 3 years old, but of course this sort of thing doesn't come under the warranty. They have to have it sorted though for obvious reasons, so they are keeping their fingers crossed that the final cost won't be too bad.

They were told that due to the increasing mice and rat population, that they had seen quite a few vans with this problem.

Hope that is not the case with your van, good luck with it.

Ina.

Hi Bob,

Follow the wiring from your gearbox. Look at the connection coming out of the gearbox, disconnect this and spray both terminals with switch cleaner (maplins or good electrical store). Then connect and dissconnect a few times before finally connecting up. If you are afraid of using this method you can try using a hair drier on the connections .

Sometimes the speedo unit can become overheated from the windscreen demister heat on the board. You may need to remove the speedo board and remake the connections and insall a heat shield behind the speedo unit.

Try the gearbox connection first, fingers crossed,

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Brendan.

This a wild guess but it works on my Vauhall Agila, where I lose all funtions ( speedo, rev counter fuel and heat guage) apart from the odeometer for some reason.

I disconnect the battery (REMEMBER TO FIND YOUR RADIO CODE) and then reconnect the battery after a couple of minutes. I found this out purely by accident after having replaced the vehicle battery.

This is a comment on the post re loss of all instrument functions.

On my peugeot autosleeper I found that if my mobile phone was on and anywhere near the instruments that all the readings went haywire. eg major panick when a long way from petrol station and the guage showed empty altho it had half a tank.

After a couple of times I realised it was the phone which I had been placing in the space next to the instruments.

I don't remember if it affected the speedo but would think the speedo is mechanical and therefore it would not?

Thanks to everyone for your input to my speedo probs.

The van is going in to an auto electricians on Monday for a 'diagnosed' faulty sensor to be replaced.

I am not going to hold my breath on this one. I will wait and see as I have had so many different conclusions by different workshops.

I'll keep you posted.

Hello everyone,

Guess what?

I've finally got a result on my speedo probs!!

Yes it was a faulty speed sensor after all!!

Sorry to have misled you all with duff info but I could only relay the info that the garage gave me.

I guess I can forgive Peugeot for a faulty sensor as this can happen to any manufacturer.

Thanks once again to everyone for their input to my problem.

Regards

Bob E.
