PJay
Hi all Asking on behalf of OH (as he has to do it) Does anyone know how to cure squeaky leaf springs? We find that we have to put grease inbetween the springs every so often, as they start to make quiet a noise. This means getting under the van to reach them, try to do this when on a grassy pitch (makes it a bit softer to lie on) Have to say this is a Fiat Ducato chassis (not the judder gearbox one!) Have also tried silicone spray, we would like a permanent solution if possible Anyone else have this problem?
Guest peter
Leaf springs used to have a rubber membrane between them in the good old days which stopped them rubbing (squeaking). Other than dismantling the springs (big job). You need to jack up the van on the chassis and not the axle, to take the weight off the springs. Then spray in Waxoyl or spray grease. You wont get anything much in there with the weight on the wheels. If you don't have a substantial trolley jack or are not confident to use it, get somone else to do it. Tomo
Hi We have always had that problem with all the motorhomes we have owned never managed to get rid of it permanently. George Collings
Most Ducatos have twin leaf springs with a plastic insert between the leaves at the end. Road dirt and rust due to lack of use can cause the squeak. Silicone spray helps for a while but oil/grease just collects dirt and wears out the inserts. Its often better after a run on wet roads as water also lubricates. The spring shackles can also creak and the same temporary remedies can be used. No doubt Fiat would call it a characteristic of the vehicle and as we know Fiats are full of character.
Ranger
After you have done what Peter says, wrap them up in canvas to keep out the flying road water and muck, which would wash out all the lubricant that you have put in. Later on you can make a wee hole in the canvas and pump in more oil if required.
onecal
Hi, You can do with care as Peter outlines. Do not use silicon based or wd 40. When you have it jacked up clean out the springs with water. Let them dry an apply white lithium grease to springs and bushings. You can get friction pads but try the lithium grease first. I have found it works and lasts a bit. Regards, Brendan. PJay
David The problem occurs when driving along, especially around corners. No problem when stationary, as we have rear steadies, which probably take the whieght (?) off the suspension a bit.
Tomo
Thanks also for the advice. Not about less night activity though. My wife is the one that hates the sqeaking when we arrive on a site and we squeak our way around to the pitch. Tomo. One life live it.
