Mel B Posted December 18, 2009 Share Posted December 18, 2009 For our main holiday, we're planning a long trip abroad but just not quite sure where yet! We've already converted some of our Tesco vouchers into Eurotunnel vouchers so once we know what dates for definite, we'll then get the chunnel booked. Might be mainly spent in Spain or Italy rather than the usual France and Germany though. Our second holiday is likely to be up to Scotland for a few weeks as we missed out on that this year due to the atrocious weather up there when we were due to go. Already booked our main holiday through Brittany and Lower Normandy. Trips to East Lothian; Cumbria; Yorks; Northumbria; New Forest; Forest of Dean, Cardigan Bay; Glastonbury; Air Tattoo in Fairford will fill in the gaps. So many places, so little time!! I was going to say a similar thing, how do you define a 'main holiday' when all your holidays are the same in length and throughout the year? We don't have a 'main holiday' they are all holidays or breaks. the question seems to assume that everyone has one main holiday and maybe some other breaks throughout the year. Then when we feel like another holiday we decide where - in general not specifically - then book a ferry for the following week and just go, aiming for the furthest point we reckon is feasible and working our way to it and then from it - with the route and/or destination liable to be changed at any time and on any whim! We are taking our Winnibago Aspect and the trailer with the power wheelchair plus the Saint Bernard dog off to France and Italy for 25 days in late March. Cost on Euro Tunnel via the Camping and Caravan club was not to bad at £241 return in the middle of the night considering we are 23'9" long plus the 8' tailer. You get the usual 10% discount except off the dog which accounts for £30 of the total. We will follow our nose and if we get as far as Italy great if not we will stay in France this trip, do not like the issues in Spain re trying to get LPG for the camper. We run the fridge, heating off the tank and if it is warm (and we hope it will be) then we must have the LPG of the fridge if nothing else. OK we have a large built in generator 4 Kw... plus a 1500 watt invertor if we need it. But the American fridges only run off the mains or the LPG. First time we have taken an American camper on the train. Have in past years taken an A class on Stena Line, but this is the first trip for our B class Ford Trition V10 6.8 petrol Winnibago. So we are looking forward to the challange especially with the dog doing her first trip on her passport. :-S We purchased the camper in July 2009 and have visited a few shows and a camp site over here, but this is the first real trip now wer have gopt her fully commissioned. She was only registered when we aquired her and still has less than 10k on the clock and under 5 years old. You get 4 times the face value when using them this way, therefore your crossing would only have been roughly £67.50 in vouchers (plus the dog). I didn't know that you could use a dog as payment for the ferry Mel - do you get a bigger doggy discount the bigger the dog or do you get a bigger discount for a small dog cos it weighs less I wonder? Posted December 27, 2009 Share Posted December 27, 2009 Just planning this years we do alternative years one year Europe next UK this year its UK so at the moment planning to leave the week after Easter for Scotland heading up for the Highlands just following our noses we will stay in Scotland until the midges start to bite, mid June, then come home for a couple of weeks before setting off again until the Schools break up our only rule is to have no rules to us thats the freedom of the motorhome. However, having ordered new van have had to economise a bit this year to pay for it and can save £1500 by doing a 30 day tour of Scotland instead of Europe. Just waiting for a warrenty job to be done on new van, once done we are off somewhere. Booked ferry for mid Aug return end Oct hoping to get to Slovinia and Croatia and anywhere else inbetween. mirage Posted January 19, 2010 Share Posted January 19, 2010 We are off in May through France Switzerland, Italian Lakes, Venice, Croatia, Slovenia and back throgh Austria and Germany. Its mainly Venice Croatia and Slovenia that will be new. Then Aug/Sept down to the South of France and back up through Switzerland as I will have the vignette, its further round but have been going to S of France for a few years and taking a different route for a change.
