penguin9
Can anyone recommend a campsite in Carcassonne, preferably within walking distance of the fort?
Guest pelmetman
There is a large aire just a few minute walk from the walled town :D Dont follow the directions in the Aires book as it has been moved, there is a municpal site on the out skirts, but a fare walk from the town. Big Momma
ACSI I think lists a camp site for Carcassone, probably not as close as the Aire but looks within a reasonable walking distance dependent on your ability and fitness I guess.
Robinhood
As mentioned, the Aire is close. However, if you want a campsite, the Campeole site, Camping La Cite is an easy walk to the fort, and quite a decent site. It can be seen in the bottom left of the following link: http://tinyurl.com/carcacamp with the citadel to the NE of it.

onecal
Hi, Camping le Cite is a good site and a lovely level stroll into town by the bank of the river. In high season entertainment every night. Regards, Brendan
gadjo
Hi we got on a car park just up the road from the camp site cos we came in from the wrong dirction through the town (bloody sat nav!!!) any way we pulled in thinking this was the aire we were looking for and the security guard told we could stay for 24 hours....for free!!!!. this was just a few minutes from the cite and was fine. we found the aire we were looking for at the other side of the cite and it looked very busy and sloped quite badly
PJay
Has the aire at the bottom of the Cite , which was also the bus station cost 10e when we were last there 4/5 years ago, closed now?
JohnP
Camping le Cite is a good site and a level stroll into town by the bank of the river. Worth going in the evening to see the buildings under floodlight. The river is full of croaking frogs in the evening.

Yes :D ............We spent the best part of an hour along with a couple of other campers driving round looking for the Aire *-) Its now further up the hill but still a easy walk to the walled city. We found the old aire which has new signs banning campers...............shame they didn't bother putting up signs showing where the new aire is :-S
Hawcara
Le cite site is an easy walk in. From, memory, if you go to the site from the main roundabout outside the town, there is a hard left turn back to get onto to the road to the site. They do the usual shut for lunch thing on reception but you can park off the road outside. The place has a good pool and the pitches are really big but have little shade. I would go there again if visiting the area. If you want to stay in the area but want more peace there is a site up in the hills to the west of Carcassonne which has a Greek theme. It is a camping cheque site. B-)

In high season entertainment every night. Regards, Brendan I agree that it is a good site and a pleasant walk. However, it is worth being aware that you will then have to walk uphill to the old city (which incidently you can see from the entrance of the campsite -an impressive scene, especially when floodlit).
