Paypal advice..

Could someone please give us some advice?...

As we don't use Paypal very often,we're not very clued up on it.. :$

(..we only really use it when buying stuff online and it is the only option available).

We have just tried to purchase something online(with paypal being the only payment option)and when clicking through the various steps,it brought up details for one of our old debit cards(which we must of registered a long time ago :-S )but not a page just fill in another card's details.

Now we can see how to "register" a new or additional card but we'd rather not do this,so we wondered if we just "removed" the old card, would that then mean that, when reaching the "pay now" stage,we would just get a page/form to fill,on which we could fill which ever card we wanted to at the time?

Or does the Paypal system NEED a card registered for it to operate? :-S

(..does that make sense?)

Usually your account will be linked to a bank account as well as your card, if the payment doesn't go through on the card then they take it from your account. Unfortunately, paypal and ebay are getting worse, and make it near on impossible to operate without using them.

You could try just coming out of the pay now page, and send a message to the seller requesting a total, when they answer, ask if they can take card payments over the phone, or if you can pay by cheque.

If you don't use paypal regularly, then you can add a new card for this occasion, then delete it afterwards, a bit of a pain, but it's an option.

It's actually the other way round Donna.

What you can do is get a pre paid card and register that. Top it up when you wish to buy something and then there is nothing left for anyone else to steal.

From personal experience do not register any major credit card as this can be hijacked and emptied to your limit. Also never register any debit cards.

Some retailers will allow you to pay using a credit card directly, but the majority use Paypal as it is quicker. It also does not reveal your card details to the retailer, however the above comments should apply at all times.

They cannot steal what you do not have.

Sorry I missed your post Dave.. :$

The card that we had registered with them has expired now anyway..but if we "needed" to register another one,as we have an account that we keep "low" just for online/ticket purchase etc,we'd use the debit card from that...

Thanks for all the advice.

If the card has expired you can update the card you used (for Paypal) to the new year date by going to 'Profile' (on your Paypal account), then under 'Financial Info' click Credit/Debit card. Update it then make sure you click 'Save' before coming off the page.

Personally I wouldn't leave any funds at all in your Paypal account. Transfer all monies over to your own Bank account. If you make an eBay transaction and there are no funds in your Paypal account, the amount owing will be billed to your Credit/Debit card account.
