Isle of Man

Hello there. We are going to the Isle of Man in August. Has anyone any advice or tips please about the island? One thing I've been wondering about and hopefully this doesn't sound daft, but are there any midges on the island? We went to the West Coast of Scotland last year and encountered the little biting blighters, so want to be prepared on this trip, if necessary!

Look forward to hearing from you.

It appears midges can be a problem, see end of 1st review for this campsite.

or

"What to Pack" for Walking on IoM

For midge repellent, nothing beats Avon Skin-so-Soft moisturiser. Apparently used by US and UK armed forces (although probably in unmarked containers!) and recommended by all from Rough Guide to Lily Savage. (Although much of this may be ...more [+]apocryphal.) True or not, it does work - I'll vouch for that. Gaiters for walking. Even if the weather is fine, knee-high gorse is no fun on unprotected legsless [-]

From 20th August it will be busy with Motorbike Racing - Manx Grand Prix (not the TT Races)

(& scroll down to August )

We used "Avon" last year in Thailand and year before in India it is very good...Mind you we also used a Deet spray product over the top

Great place, but they want your money in a hotel not in your own accomodation.

The ferry cost will be high and campsites are very rare. I don't think caravans are even allowed. I suspect if you wild camp you may just be shot!

Strange about the midges though. I've been plenty of times at all times of year (not in a van) and never seen a midge. Maybe I've just been lucky.

campsites not very good book early and make sure your van has a toilet and shower, dont go when motorbike racing is on unless you like motorbikes, take your own food if you can food dearer than uk but tesco in douglas, fill up in uk fuel cost more, crossing cheaper from fleetwood no midges when we went in august ,its a nice island but like uk in the 60s people nice the place is very rural with small villages and small towns, marks and sparks in douglas and you can park on the front in douglas, check the weather may june sept may be better than august, you will have a nice time
