winter camping

Hi everyone,

We are going to spain again in the winter and wondered if anyone knows of a campsite open beginning Januaury near Le Mans. Either just before or after as this year our first stop was at Nantes and we found that a bit far for one days driving. We lke to drive about 200/250 miles in one day.

Oh, I know we can use aires but we need electric as we take a small freezer that needs electric.

Hope someone can help as I've noticed what a well travelled lot you are :-)

We stayed in a new site about 5kms outside Le Mans two weeks ago. Lovely hard standing water and electric on pitch Brand new toilets. There were nine pitches for MH only use. Can't remember the name, but it is in the Acsi Book (Which is at present in MH) so unable to look it up. Will stay there again. If you don't have acsi, I will look it up to-morrow, and post details

Hi, You didn,t say which ferry you were crossing on. It makes a difference in staging your stops down.

If you go via Poitier there a several camp sites open but it may not be the route you want. Also its all on non toll roads

Some Aires do have electric ;-) .............

They also turn the electric off in the winter along with removing taps.

Cap Bretton do this although the Aire is still open for parking (free)

The electricity has been removed from Jarnac Aire and overnight parking of motor homes is now prohibited. This was due to abuse by some motor homers this winter who hogged the supply and blocked access to the borne by draping their cables over the fence to the bourne. They hogged the marked bays by parking so that 4 vans took up the 5 allocated spaces. They had small brown barrels set out to prevent others parking near them.

re my earlier post

The site we stayed at is at

Yvre-l'Eveque Camping Le Pont Romain GPS N48"01 09" E0.16'47"

ACSI no 1117

It does not show as opening after 31/10, but as it is new this year, maybe worth making an enquiry' ?

It is certainly set for winter MH pitches as all hard standing.

Info @lepontromain.com

Just googled, and opens from march to 31st October

Great pity, as would make a great stop over going south.

Thanks for the replies. we use the tunnel and use ordinary roads. We know one near Poitiers but were hoping to stop before that,(sorry if this sounds fussy)

As mentioned many aires do turn off electric as we've found out so thats why we hoped to find a site.

You never know someone might still know of one, but once again, many thanks to those who have tried to help

True,..........But when we went down to Spain in December and came back January we found more Aires with working electric than without............several of which where the leccy was free :D

We have found it difficult to locate sites, at suitable driving intervals, that are open in the winter en route through France and have experienced dead electrics and missing taps.

However, we have discovered an excellent little site in the Loire, not far from Saumur, called Le Chant d'Oiseau. (more info on www.loire-gites.com). It IS open all year and the Yorkshire couple that run it are very hospitable.

Further on we usually stop at either Camping La Magaudie, Carreze, near Brive-la-Gallarde or, if I'm still awake, there are a couple of places we know near Montauban.

Hope this helps. See you in Spain!
