JeffersonCampervan
We may make it to Istanbul on our Balkans trip (we commence that trip in a week). All the searching I've done yields this picture of the camping situation: 1) there used to be a few campings close to, but outside of, Istanbul. Aparently the best-located ones have all closed in the past few years, leaving only coastal campings with torturous transit into Istanbul. (?). 2) on the great magbaz site there is a reference to a carpark used in 2009 (http://www.magbaztravels.com/content/view/870/30/): " 'fishermen's quay' car park on the Kennedy Caddesi dual carriageway" Anyone have any more recent info? We'll only spend 3 days at most and are most interested in old town& historic sites.
Robinhood
There are very recent reports on http://www.campincar-infos.com, indicating that it is still open, but these reports are very negative, and also indicate that there is now a lack of facilities (water, dump, etc). The same site also holds details of motorhome parking (without services) fairly close by. (You'll need to look at the website, since it is scripted, and I therefore can't post a direct link. Try http://www.campingcar-infos.com/Francais/aire.php?numid=6019&Localité=ISTANBUL it was reported to be open recently. You could always ask one of the local hotels or large service stations if you can park up for a couple of nights. Had some good reports (for Turkey) on this site http://www.mistikcamping.com/sitebuilder/home.aspx
Robinhood
....well Don managed to get a direct link (which is more than I can do, even knowing it is possible). I also managed to mis-spell the website. *-) However, the entry Don has posted is the alternative which I referred to above. There is also another entry for the Kennedy Caddesi, which has the recent, but negative comments.
JeffersonCampervan
Thanks Don & Robin Hood - I had managed to find the "stellplatz" location page & the thread on the devolution of the old preferred parking space by searching the camping-car infos site. As for Mistik camping, I had run across it awhile ago, but piecing together experiences on Thorn Tree, etc., it seems there is no fast direct transit from the outlying coastal area into Istanbul (I could be wrong?). We're looking for a secure place to leave the RV as we walk the centre of Istanbul, so I think we'd try the parking location & see how we feel about it. JeffersonCampervan
Well we are back and during the trip we did spend several days in Istanbul. We found 3 viable stellplatz locations and have marked them on a map on our site: http://travel.jeffersoncampervan.com/2011_page_2.html#Stellpl%C3%A4tze_in_Istanbul Despite apprehension expressed in other threads & forums, we would have no problem staying in any of the three (YMMV). Hi Frank, Enjoyed reading your site, brought back memories of Istanbul. Do you have the GPS co-ords for the stelplatz in Istanbul please? JeffersonCampervan
Don - Clicking on my Google Map icons gives the GPS co-ordinates as follows: 1) in town-parking lot: 41.004273,28.977926 2) Kennedy Cadesi otopark: 41.001658,28.977454 3) Kennedy Cadesi Sports Facility: 41.002411,28.967959 I had saved the locations on my Nuvi, thinking it would have a menu selection to read the GPS co-ordinates for a saved location - then when I went to do the site,I couldn't find any such option. Fortunately, Google Maps does, as your question prompted me to discover. Thanks for your help & advice in planning this trip, BTW!
