cobra 4908

Hi, Just bought a 2nd hand motorhome and it has the cobra 4908 alarm but i cannot get it to set at all, the light on the dash doesnt flash at all and no beeps when set, even tried "stealing" my own motor but alarm does not activate. Any ideas very welcome thank you.

According to GOOGLE, the Cobra 4908 alarm system began to be marketed around 2005. It's described here:

but I don't know if that's relevant in your case.

 

Having looked at a couple of other on-line comments, it may be that you need to perform some sort of key-fob re-matching with the system, but that's just a shot-in-the-dark guess.

 

Simplest thing would be for you to contact Cobra(UK) and ask for advice as the company is seemingly customer-friendly.

(I assume you aren't able to check with whoever sold you the motorhome regarding the alarm arming-procedure and/or whether the alarm was known (or believed) to be in working order at the time of sale. I also assume there's no warranty that would compel the vendor to fix an alarm-related fault.)

Hiya, thanks for your reply, the previous owner has no clue about it when asked, the alarm system is not a key fob one, its built into the original remote key too. I emailed cobra and they replied saying take it to a local dealer, so I rang him and he said its a really easy 30 second job but he charges a minimum fee of £50 plus VAT which seems steep for a 30 second job, also he cannot do it until first week off Jan as he is "too busy".

 

Stumped.........

There are scattered on-line references to this alarm system and it may be that the initial installation isn't just a plug-and-play DIY task. Unfortunately, without access to a full set of installation instructions it's impossible to know if that's true. It may be that some simple subsequent workshop task (eg. disconnecting the vehicle battery) may have a knock-on effect on a 4908 alarm system that requires follow-up action.

 

It would appear from the confident reply given by the Cobra agent you spoke to that it's far from unknown for this alarm system to go into a coma and that it should be simple and easy to reactivate it if the right equipment and expertise is available. As you say, £60 is a lot to pay for such a rapid fix, but you may have no alternative. I note too, that new Cobra 4908s are now being offered on-line for around £100.

 

I'd be tempted to contact a few firms that advertise on-line that they are Cobra specialists, pick their brains and ask for a repair quote. If they confirm that specialist equipment and skill is needed to fix your alarm problem, but the task is easy and quick, then you can decide whether you are prepared to pay £60.

 

I'd also be tempted to go back to Cobra and ask if they can send you a copy of the 4908's installation and operating documentation (assuming you haven't already got this, of course).
