Boycott Hayling Island?

I was dismayed to read on another MH site that Havant Boro Council now charge £20 a night for what is effectively a parking space, apparently because the campsite owners complained about loss of trade. So now you pay "campsite fees" whether you want a full facility site or just a place to stop, using your own facilities.

Surely people should be free to pay for what they want to use? Councils should not give in to this kind of bullying behaviour from site operators.

We've stayed on the Island before - yes, on one of the caravan sites - but won't be doing so again!!

Let's all boycott the place - even those of us who would have used sites anyway - until the council sees sense.

and pages 32-36 of the following file

I'm unsure where Tony's £20-per-night charge comes from.

The revised charges appear to comprise a rise (September through May) from £8-per-night to £10-per-night, and a rise (June through August) from £10-per-night to £15-per-night.

As I understand it the May 10th meeting debated the issue and passed it on to the relevant portfolio holder, Councillor Collins. It seems that the final decision was made, I'm unsure by whom, to increase to overnight charge to £10 and £20. See: http://decisions.havant.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/amenmdent-to-parking-Prices.pdf

I suspect that there are certain council members who don't want this overnight parking facility at all and used the complaint by 2 campsite owners to push the fee to such a high level that it will be under used and therefore ultimately closed.

I don't think any consultation with car park users has been made.

If anyone wants to make representations, Councillor Collins' contact details are here: http://www.havant.gov.uk/havant-6937

We went to Hayling Island - once about thirty years ago - and we were so impressed that we never went back!

Your shock may be misplaced.

Tony said "I was dismayed to read on another MH site...", not "I was dismayed to read on another MH forum..." His dismay may well have been caused by the information published here:

I've never made any secret of the fact that I am one of the chosen few who have seen the light .......

....... or of the fact that I'm a member of the PMH Forum!

(where I'm sure I've seen one or two other familiar faces ....)

But Derek's right - the item I saw was in their news section, it's only appeared on their forum since, because I put it there!

In addition to the proposed boycott, it would be sensible for interested parties to contact the Councillor involved in the decision to increase the parking charges (link provided by Andy C above) with a copy e-mail to the main Council (contact details below).

With 'localism' now being the order of the day, if there is opposition from local campsite owners to motorhome parking on Hayling Island and no support for motorhome parking from Hayling Island residents/businesses or from within the local council, then motorhome parking will become progressively more expensive or even be prohibited. That's what local empowerment is supposed to be about - people seeking to get things they favour to happen in their local area, but also people seeking to prevent things happening that they do not like.
