Instead of going on the A16/E40 use the N1 toward the Belgium border. Due to most traffic travelling on the A16 it is relatively quiet and after 6pm is almost deserted. There are a few spots along there you can easily park up to overnight. Head for Adinkerke and you can't go wrong. If you don't find anything en route you fancy then Adinkerke itself is a small quiet village where the only businesses is one Service Station and endless 'baccy' shops! Easy enough to park up down any residential street.....it is VERY quiet and nobody will bother you.

As we have not been there for three years now the place we use to overnight is as you go out past the lorry park you come to a roundabout, turn left and you are going along side the dunes with a building on the right, past the building and its all open both sides. On the right we parked just off the road on a sandy bit but not to go any further as the ground was soft further on. We are talking about 2/300 yds past that roundabout. Hope this helps. PS just thought , why not try Google Earth to that spot.

This is the information from my Aires File for Bergues:

J16 off the A25 then about 200yds on the RHS. 16 mls E of Dunkerque and 32 mls E of Calais. Free parking only. Services are available at Camping Verdun for €5 - take shortcut (a couple of miles or so) through the town centre towards Hondschoote. Quite a lot of the old town walls are still in tact and make for an interesting walk – leaflet from the TIC in the bell tower on the town square.

We have used this place a couple of times over the last three years.

Agree that both Hondschoote and Bergues are nice places and good aires to stay on, but remember no services on aire at Bergues. Bray Dunes also has no services and is O.K. but very much a car park aire; also not available for most of July and August as used for coach parking. Nearer to Dunkerque is of course Gravelines which we like as nice situation, easy walk to walled town and good value at 6€/night plus 2€ if services required. If however, you are arriving late then Gravellines might well be full, although others should be O.K., and best bet might be to stay on parking next to terminal building. We arrived 1.00 am, due to bad weather a few months ago and stayed there and found it not too bad and better than driving on so late.

We've just come back last week and stayed at Gravelines, (10-15 mins from ferry) where there is an Aire right next to the marina. The council have put an electronic ticket machine in so costs 6 Euros. Plenty of motorhomes come and stay there before going on the ferry. Also just round the corner is a new Blupoint, for emptying grey/black water plus filling water, cost 2 Euro. Just follow the signs when leaving the Aire. Very clean, and quiet, plus feels safe.

I agree with Robertandjean regarding Dunkerque Port. When arriving late/leaving early we have overnighted in the DFDS carpark. We’ve done this on a few occasions in recent years. The terminal buildings have toilets and (depending on the time) food and drink.

As you leave the ferry-port go around the first roundabout and follow the signs for the DFDS Terminal Buildings.
