Silverstone

No spectators there today for the practice because of the public car parks not suitable for the condition's. Nothing changes there then, even with all the millions thrown at it, its been like that since I first went in the late 50's.

Bet the airstrip was open ;-)

Hope the weather is good next week, have been invited to take the car to The Oulton Park Classic Car Show B-)

I don't think it's any fault of Silverstone organisation : - The weather & unofficial campsites & Motorhomes & Caravans seem to be the cause?

It would appear that alot of the problems yesterday were caused by motorhomes who could'nt access the unofficial campsites, so caused mayhem on the roads.

From ITV & BBC news:-

"Problems started when a deluge of up to 40 millimetres of rainfall fell in a 12-hour period.

By mid-afternoon on Friday all campsites in and around Silverstone had to be closed. With camping grounds sodden, caravans and motorhomes had to be escorted in one at a time when ordinarily they would have driven straight in, so backing up the traffic." (ITV)

I know someone who took 4 HOURS to get OUT of the car park after the practice had finished.

He wasn't stuck in the mud - he was parked on Tarmac.

I've not heard BBC / ITV ( or anyone else ) explain why that happened.

We go to most race tracks in the UK and even some in Europe but some years ago we decided that we would not attend Silverstone ever again.

It is by far the worse race track in the UK and Europe

For goodness sake stop trying to blame someone will ya? We've had exceptional rainfall in recent weeks and in the last couple of days it has acchieved Biblical proportions. Not even Bernie Ecclestone can do anything about what falls out of the sky. It is not limited to Silverstone either, plenty of other places in the country are undr water. In fact its not just in the UK, I read today of exceptional rainfall in southern Russia which has caused flash flooding and 78 people were killed!

We spoke to my wifes sister in France last night.

They came home late a night the other day to find that there had been a very bad hail storm, haIl stones the size of tennis balls ( a neighbour had kept some in the fridge for them to see) they had 6 Velux windows in the roof smashed and over 500 tiles on the roof broken. The tiles were only replaced 2 years ago, the originals had been ther over 300 years.

At least we only had the rain.

ps Imglad we were not staying there in the Motorhome

Not sure why you are bringing floods into it Dave. I haven't heard of areas around Silverstone being flooded.

I agree it's nothing to do with Bernie Ecclestone, but we were told that they employ " traffic management experts "

I don't think it was even raining at the end of the practice, so why would it take 4 hours to get out of a Tarmac carpark ?

Bernie Ecclestone:-

"I'm really, really upset for the fans, but in reality if it was you running the race what would you do?" Ecclestone said. "They couldn't predict the rain. From what I hear there are a lot of camping sites that shouldn't be there that let people park. Because they were under water, the people arrived that had paid to park, drove around and that's what caused all the trouble with the traffic jams.

"Honestly I don't think anyone expected the amount of rain we had. You might as well say ‘why didn't the councils in all these different places throughout England do something?’ because I looked on the TV and saw places flooded, houses flooded, shops flooded, people abandoning cars. I didn't expect to see that either."

Sums it up rather well.

...I'm just a but suprised that someone hasn't tried to blame Warners yet...?... (lol) (lol)

.............. even more surprised to see Ken Clark win the race.

( I assume he won - he had the most prominent position on the podium )

My son is there - been camping with a couple of mates in a 4 man tent on one of the official sites and says the organisation is and has been very good indeed. The weekend has been great for them and the racing superb.

He says considering what the organisers had to deal with - he has no complaints at all.

He is staying tonight as well and will make the best of driving home tomorrow.

We came back from Dorset today so SWMBO could watch the Murrey match on a large screen HD TV and passed houses that have been flooded and debris on the roads that indicate just what we put up with over the last 48 hours.

Because it was excessive rainfall that waterlogged the car parks and caused them to be closed thus backing up the traffic on the surrounding roads.
