i am trying to convince my co pilot that we should go back to moroccco this year (jan-feb). we were last there some 4 or 5 tyears ago and loved it, but we went during ramadan, which was fine, other than there being no other tourists or anyone to talk to.

she has had an on line search and unfortunately found a review that said last year the weather was terrible, the roads awful and the kids were a major problem. any one got any up to date knowledge or views??? i need some good news to convince her its a good plan!!!

Hi Have you read Jason and Julies (ourtour.co.uk) book Motorhome Morocco, makes for interesting and informative reading, available as a download, or on Kindle.

Hope this helps.

Val

Personally if you have been to Morocco this ebook is likely to be a waste of money as you already know the deal!! Suggest you see comment at http://www.magbaztravels.com/content/view/1306/27/

We went in 2009/10 and enjoyed our experience. We are thinking of returning later this year in spite of the hassle factor.

As to the weather it always remains a highly variable factor wherever you go!!

In spite of the less than European standards (food / roads /campsites etc.) it is a great country.

BTW we too would welcome any updates based on personal experience,

thanks

thanks ian and val, not a lot of feedback from recent visitors, i guess i'll just have to convince her that its not any diffferent to when we were last out there!!! personally i am all for 'diffferent' standards of roads, campsites, everything!. i find that away from western europe attitudes are far better and a breath of fresh air.

as an ex squaddie i actually prefer roughing it! (but i didnt find morocco to be that).

heres hoping for more replies :-D

enjoyed the film (all 3 parts) dave, but dont know if i should show her it, as there werent too many shops ( or campers) !!! it was the lack of tourists that got to her last time, so we didnt make the desert (only got down to marrakesh). i was impressed with the blonde cook though! she had a lovely tagine :$

.....if you want wall to wall -literally motorhome tourists then stick to the coast between January and March (mainly French). Travelled north on the coast in January and were amazed at the numbers driving south.

We went pre Christmas to the desert and saw very few tourists but were told that thinks picked up in the new year.

Shopping as in western style malls is NOT Morocco so sadly she will be disappointed.

If you like being hassled, and roads that have a foot drop, and campsites that are basic, electrics that are dangerous 8-)..............

Then Morocco's for you ;-)

Well that's what was it like in 78 when I drove a Highwayman down to Casablanca.........I suspect its not changed much :D

thanks everyone, im wanting the desert, (she says she knows what sand looks like, theres loads on newbiggin beach!!!!) i dont think she gets it, if i wanted somewhere like spain, id stay in spain?

but if the coast is full of tourists that should be a good trade off. no shops suits me. she's got enough shoes to kit out out a centipede colony!

is it only the high atlas that becomes snowed up in jan/feb ?????

I had a tendency to think along the same lines having done the dunes near Arachon in France.

But four days in Merzouga changed that!! I found it to be a very interesting experience: to be driven in a 4x4 to the top and look out over the sea of sand at sunset with my wife of 30 plus years was magic. IMHO the desert is an answer to our modern hectic commercialised life style.

Hassled yes but see it from their perspective -you have everything and a plush MH they struggle to subsist.

Roads I was surprised at the relative good quality even driving through Todra.Even the short bits of piste were OK

Campsites -yes basic by European standards. But if you are more used to aires /stellplatz then no problems. Electrics they worked fine for us and I am not too aware of many MHers getting electrocuted.

Probably not up to many UK MHers with their complete set of electrical items.

have to agree ian, we did basic campsites last time, and we do aires, (CC and C &CC leave us cold)

so no problem there, but last time there was no one around, it being ramadan, and she needs people.

is the todra gorge accessible to a 22ft van? or not advisable??? is there a campsite/overnight area near there?? im sure i once read of a hotel wiith a motorhome there ( or was it near el chebbi??).

We did Todra in a 6m MH without any problems in December and drove up to Tamtattouchte, Stayed at Auberge Baddou.

The only hairy bit was the initial entry into the gorge where the road had been washed away and a temporary piste constructed. Well worth it. Plenty of places where you could probably park before you enter the gorge as well.

Dades gorge worth it too. Road was in good condition.

We did this all in December and it was very quiet but things warm up with visitors in January ...or so we were told.
