Colin,

you've posted the instructions for the gas-only Combi, not the CombiE.

Though the answer is still the same (i.e. you CAN use space heating with the unit drained down), the controls are rather different.

The key to use (of the 4E) when the unit is drained down is that the heating control should be used ONLY on the "space heat" setting, and NOT on either of the water-heating-only settings, NOR on the "space heating plus 60 degree water setting".

So, the option selected when drained should be for space-heating only (i.e. one click down from the "O" or off position on the heat selection dial).

The other dial for the CombiE, which selects the heating method (gas, 2 levels of electric, or a mix of these), can be used as you wish.

Heating with drained water system

Select gas or electrical operation using the power selector

switch. Illumination of the yellow LED (g) on the power

selector switch indicates that the unit is operating with 230 V.

Move rotary switch on control panel to operating position (m).

Turn the rotary switch (h) to the desired thermostat setting

(1 – 5). The green LED (k) for operation is lit and simultaneously

indicates the position of the selected room temperature. The

yellow LED (p) will be lit only when the temperature of the

unit is below 5 °C!

Depending on the operating mode, the unit will automatically select the required power level according to the temperature difference between the setting on the control panel and

the current room temperature. Once the room temperature

selected on the control panel has been reached, the heater

switches off. The warm air fan continues to run at slow

speed until the outgoing air temperature (on the unit) has

fallen to 40 °C or less.

Hi Colin and Robinhood.

Thanks for the info I thought that I was asking a stupid question and was ready for some flack as most boilers have to be filled with water befor you switch them on.

I can now go away safe in the knowledge that I will not burn out the heating element in the boiler.

Many thanks, Mike.
