Hi

Has anyone stayed on a nice site here. We don't want a large all singing and dancing site. Small sites are our favourites as long as they have a place for chemical and waste water disposal and sometimes electric and pool. We have a 6m motorhome and carry bikes.

We are looking at going in June this year.

Any suggestions please.

Quite like that place. Where you have been directed there is an aire, but every time we went past it was fairly full. However, there is a Camping Cheque site just down the road from there, that backs right onto the beach. Lot of posh houses on that stretch as well. There is also a nice little town on the way in with a Lidl.

Don't recall a lot to do, but we enjoyed it at the time. :-D

We can recommend Municipal Camping La Pointe at the far end of the island through the port of L'Herbaudière. As a municipal site it's good and simple in a superb position on the rocky headland, even has its own WW2 bunkers. Short walk into the town with reasonable places to eat and some shops. Easy and good cycle to the main town along the coastal cycleway. Main supermarket is in the middle of the island. Main town is worth a half day.

Large newly upgraded aire next to the bus station. I guess it will be full all summer.

Other sites seemed expensive but had quality facilities.

Don't even think about driving over the D948 Route de Gois which covers at mid tide (lol). Looks exciting but lots of cars and some motorhomes get caught by the tide. Loads of our french friends park on the causeway next to the "no parking" signs to net their lunch - plu ca change? Use the free bridge D38 route.

Not a bad island but small with lots of marshes and limited things to do unless you like shoreline walking.

Hi Knaus,

We have been on the island a few times, firstly with family and stayed at a camp site not far from the bridge on to the island, but can't remember the name (sorry). The most recent was early this year when we stayed at Camping du Clair Matin and joined in with Pêche à Pied - fishing, but not as we know it, using a rake and a bucket. That is, fishing for shell fish. The nice bit is eating the proceeds of the efforts of the morning. This camp is at is at the north end of the island and only two minutes walk from the beach. It is about a ten minute walk from the town of Noirmoutier. At the start of the season I think the cost was about 11€30 per night with hook-up at 3€60 extra. Showers, toilets, emptying points etc are all available.

Also stayed at this site recently and can recommend it. Free WiFi too - in the reception area [covered seating when the office was closed].

The aire at Noirmoutier ville is an easy walk to town centre. (N 47 0 3, W2 15 8). Yes it might get busy but takes at least 200 vans and you should have no problem in June; we were there in July (Bastile Day) and were able to find a place. It is much nearer the town than any of the campsites, and town is well worth a visit. (7€/night ).

Yes, agree it is very convienient for the town, they were rebuilding it when we were there earlier in 2012.

Suggest you also try the aire at L'Herbaudiere- great beach location but always popular and only room for 18 vans. Equally good value at €7/night but there again the Campsite was only €10.25/night this year including electricity and has better sea views. So as usual - pay your money and take your choice.

We also stopped at Indigo earlier this year. Was off peak so site was quiet. As said free WiFi, easy walk into town. Hire a bicycle on site and explore the quiet cycle routes around the island.

BTW , the staff on site speak English

The Passage du Gois is worth a visit, but probably best to cross on bikes. We cycled about half way across last Sept.

When we got there there was a queue of cars apparently waiting to cross as the tide receded - all edging forward a few yards at a time.

Then, to our surprise, most turned off the road onto the seabed and the occupants went off digging for shellfish.

The road is open for about 3 hours between tides so I imagine that those who get caught have spent too much time digging and not enough clock watching !

We saw a few motorhomes cross, but it's not likely to be a quick crossing because of all the

sight see -ers.

There are a number of platforms erected alongside the ( approx 2 mile ) road for anyone who gets caught out.

I will attempt to attach a pic of the cars waiting to cross:
