Good afternoon.

Am considering installing a safe in my motorhome. Have any of you done so and if you have what things did you take into consideration? I'm not sure about whether it is necessary or not, somewhere to store passports, money, cards etc, or is it a case of always carrying those items with you when you leave the 'van?

What do you all do?

Your views would be of great interest.

we have a safe, its fastened to the floor and sides with big bolts, and in a place where the scum can't get a crowbar in, they would have to destroy a far bit, so that would take time and effort and noise..and if they manage well just make sure you have copies of everything on a usb stick or 2 so at least you can cancel everything and get replacements

we have one bolted through floor and chassis. big enough to take all expensive items. travel laptop/cameras/phones/ video/sat nav etc...No point fitting if you dont use it.

depending on where we are I leave some money in it and carry the rest plus important documents:

Hi

I carry passports, cash etc, in a " pac safe" pouch which I carry across my body so, with its wire strap, it can't just be cut off, it can't be seen, and it comfortable. I also have pacsafe straps on my cameras and a bag protector if I'm out and about. For me it works and survived two attempted thefts ( one quite physical) when we were trekking in S America. (My daughter used one of the bag protectors 10 years ago when travelling round the world and it is still in excellent condition).

My laptops are still in the m/h so are vulnerable but I back up all my data, pics, etc on a small portable hard disk I carry around. So the laptop may be stolen but I am insured and still have the data. I am not worried about them knicking the laptop, I rather they found something quick and left rather than trashing the place looking for valuables. When we are trekking we leave laptop in a bag and use a bag safe.

I also have copies of all my documents and CRT cards backed up on the Internet so I can access anywhere in the world. I have found computer access all over the world from deepest S America to the middle of Africa so no problems getting the info if you need it.

It all works for us.

Peter

Yes, I fitted a small safe, Bolted it through the Floor with Bolts & 'Shear Nuts' , large galvanized plate underneath, and no 'crowbar room' to get it up. Just for money/cards/passports. For 'Peace of mind'.

Blimey Eddie you'd need the safe in a rear box to get that lot in. (lol)

Back to the subject. Put the safe in a place where it can be obscured, such as a wardrobe, where it will be covered by clothing. Instead of bolts through the van, you could use epoxy or evostik to cement it in place. That would take some shifting.

We have one of these bolted through the floor. Plenty big enough for passports / licence / cash/ .

Although the motorhome is well alarmed I always pass a chain through the cab door handles and put a padlock on it , so if they try to pull open one of the cab doors it pulls against the opposite one making entry impossible, but keep the key in a safe easy to reach place for a quick exit in an emergency.
