geoff
I shall be touring Germany again this year and would appreciate any suggestions for the north of the country. I'm contemplating travelling directly to Frankfurt and starting my tour from Fulda, heading in an anticlockwise direction and finishing at Luxembourg 3-4 weks later. Although I like small towns with character I'm not keen on big cities so places like Berlin wouldn't interest me and I'm more interested in beautiful views, quaint villages, industrial museums, caverns, and steam trains, etc than shopping centres, art galleries, and cathedrals. Any suggestions on suitable areas and - and stellplatz ! - would be most appreciated.
Klyne
What about the Baltic Coast, all the way along to the border with Poland? Pity you don't like large cities as Berlin I find quite fascinating with lots of recent history. malc d
Many years ago we visited the German naval museum at Kiel in the north east. During WW2 there was was a U-boat base there and it was possible to go inside a U boat which was on display on a beach there. Very cramped inside and it makes you wonder how people could put up with such awful conditions. I believe that it's still there.

Mike B.
nowtelse2do - 2013-03-18 9:26 PM Goslar in the Harz mountains, lovely area, big mining museum there. Surrounding area is very nice with plenty to see and do. Dave Nice town too but the stellplatz is a bit iffy. If you go, check out the clock in the square at 3pm it has a fascination mining theme as it chimes.
Nethernut
Einbeck, one of the old Hansa towns, lovely free stellplatz next to the swimming pools, 5 minute walk into the town centre. Home of Einbeck beer, one of Germany's oldest, town had over 160 breweries in the 1600s. Lovely 13th/14th century architecture. Bad Salzuflen - lovely spa town with really good stellplatz, lots to see, good cycling and discounts for spa centre and swimming pool. You could then either tour the Harz mountains or go up to the Baltic coast. Peenemunde worth a visit, a stellplatz with a difference about 20 mins from there. Griefswald, another Hansa town has a lovely little stellplatz two minutes from the river and the same from the one of the largest town squares in Germany with amazing buildings. Wismar - another lovely little town with a superb stellplatz near the old harbour and 5 minutes from town centre. Lubeck - too big a town and very commercialised, only disappointment on the Baltic trip for us! Schonberger strand area - 14 kms sandy beach, lovely way marked bike trails, visited the U boat museum and memorial (to submariners of all nationalities) at Laboe - another pretty seaside town with good beaches. Plenty of lovely stellplatz all along the beach road. Kiel canal has a good selection of stellplatz - relax and watch the ships pass!

AliB
pelmetman - 2013-03-21 3:54 PM Can't remember who posted it but someone put up this link www.germany.travel ;-)...........we asked for some info and it arrived today, loads of stuff including and campsite book B-) Ours arrived yesterday, looks like lots of useful information. A good link, thanks. I would recommend the Luneburger Heide, north east of Hannover. We stayed at Hermannsburg, loevely campsite near a lake. You can swin in the lake. Miles upon miles of cycling & walking tracks across the heath. We went in August and once into the heath we did not see another person for hours. I could not believe the place was so tranquil. If you like old towns then Celle is worth a visit. There is a circular cycle route from Hermannsburg to Celle. The local bus has a bike trailer so you can hop on with the bike if you get tired. http://www.mygermancity.com/lueneburg-heath If you are going to Harz Mountains try the Harz mountain railway. A bit expensive to ride up the mountain but take the train in the other direction to Wernigerode. A wonderful olde world town with the usual castle. But the crème de la crème for technical heads like me is the Aviation museum. Lots of different exhibits that you do not see at UK museums. Even the wife enjoyed the museum although we spent all day there and never got to the castle. There is a reasonable Stellplatze close to the centre of the town. http://www.luftfahrtmuseum-wernigerode.de/en/index_en.htm Now you have got me thinking about engineering, the old Overhead railway at Wuppertal is wonderful. This summer we are heading for Saxony, exploring Dresden, River Elbe and down to the Czech border.
Homenaway
Hi, We toured along the North German coast last year and found plenty of interesting places, especially the Hanseatic towns Lubeck and Wismar and also spent a few days on the isle of Rugen which has a steam train. Have a look at our website here for lots of ideas.Weather was mixed in May and June and there are virtually no hills!! We found plenty of stellplatz mostly not too busy.
