prima
Has anyone advice for attending the Salon please? I'm hoping to go on the 2nd September, staying at a site in Meerbusch. Would one day cover it, given that I am not in the market for a new van?
Guest JudgeMental
Not really its a big event...2 days. Stay on site parking for 1000's campers and free shuttle bus to show. Best show ever you won't regret it. Wear comfortable shoes! :-D

PCC
Join the Caravan Salon Club - there's a link on the Caravan Salon website. It costs nothing and it offers discounts off the entrance fee, camping fee, and access to a members lounge with comfortable seating and cheap coffee. You need to take a few rests otherwise you'll get motorhome overload!
Den
It is a great show, spoils you for uk overpriced shows. They even supply chemicals for your toilet. This year will be our 4th time. You can test the electric bikes around a circuit enjoy good local food in the evenings by the bar, peak under tree lined avenues. No need to park near by. It can be a little noisy from the airport, but that's a small price to pay. The river Rhine is close with great cycle and walk ways. You can meet owners of the smaller manufacturing companies. I purchased an electric awning on our return to the uk, with a huge discount after talking to the owner and using his name.( he did tell me to do this ) We tend to spend 3 nights. A small trick , arrivals after 4 pm are free that night. As previously recommended join the clun, takes 5 mins and lasts a life time with regular emails. Rowan Lee
We stayed at Meerbusch the year before last, after we had been to the show. It's a great site on the banks of the Rhine in the country. There is a little ferry which goes across to the gorgeous little village of Kaiserswerth on the opposite bank and then there is good transport into Dusseldorf, although it is a bit of a walk from the ferry. However, I don't think I would use it as a base to visit the show.
Guest JudgeMental
usually a good selection of top class electric bikes to try as well...not so hot on accesories. Weather has always been brilliant the 3 times we have visited. A night out in the Altstadt (Old Town) recommended, great bars restuarants, great atmosphere...The only area that escaped bombing
whisturx
Well worth a visit but be careful !! I have only been twice and both times ended up buying a new van as the prices and part exchange were too good to miss. Just driven my latest ,ordered in August last year from near Kiel in Northern Germany back home on German Export plates (Third party insurance !!) in the snow ! Made it home and scraped the wheel arch on my own gate !! All legal now with the VCA inspection done and registered. My dealer posted a new wheel cover direct from the factory so all as new !! Excellent show. Take plenty of cash ( ATM in the hall entrance) as credit/ debit cards not accepted.

Guest JudgeMental
prima - 2013-04-03 11:44 PM Grand. That's what I'll do then. Thank you. From the "Grand" I am guessing you are a distant cousin from over the water (I'm from Cork):-D. We arrived late one Friday night before show started in a thunderstorm and joined a long line at entrance. weather was so bad and it was so late they just escorted all of us (about 100+ vans) on to site and we all parked nose in on the wide side road. Next day we could move on to main camping area, we stayed put as it was fine...Just went to the tent for a few excellent beers and some food and next day glorious weather. Its a very relaxed and a very enjoyable event....A few years back at the time of the Celtic bubble it was packed with Irish, when we went 2010 meet none..... whatsupdoc
ok - this thread's been dead a while now, but we're going to Dusseldorf this year and will seriously consider buying there ... if the process is relatively straightforward. So I'd be grateful for any info from anyone who has actually done this (I know about the European Certificate of Conformity and Garage Evidence, necessary before it can be registered with DVLA). Are there any import taxes to pay apart from VAT (20% here as opposed to 19% there, so not much difference in that respsect). Is insurance to initially drive the van to the UK likely to be a problem? Are there any other practicalities to consider in that respect? And is part-ex of a RH drive motorhome a possibility (we are hoping to buy a LH drive as 95% of our touring is done in Europe). As I say, ANY info would be very gratefully received! Thanks in advance.
lennyhb
We have brought a van both times we have been. No one in mainland Europe will take a RHD in part ex. If you buy in Germany you have to have German 3rd party insurance & export plates which your dealer will arrange. Alternatively if you don't want to risk it on 3rd party insurance dealer may drive it to the port for a fee or you could get it transported door to door for about £1500. We buy in Belgium and dealer drives it to the port for us (no charge), you can only get UK insurance on a VIN plate once the van is on UK soil. You will need to change the speedo dial easy done with a Lockwood overlay dial, rear fog lights must conform may need changing if buy an A Class headlights are usually Heller projector units which is a case of moving a lever to change to straight dipping.
