Try *googling "kitchen racks"...(*or rather Bing in our case)

..because that's just brought up some images/ideas that could be easily adapted for the purpose..but I suppose it depends what you have in mind...

(..I'm picturing a large wire,"spice rack" type configuration).

There are photos of a 2013 Rapido 9-Series here

http://www.highbridgecaravans.co.uk/showAllImages.php?PATH=images/motorhomes/new/745/400/

Some of these show a shelf above the kitchen sinks and the top of the forward-facing rear passenger seat. The fixing method isn't obvious but, if this is what you have in mind and you know it clips in place (rather than being permanently attached) I guess the 'brackets' evident beneath the shelf could just push down each side of the vertical board behind the sinks. Temporary or permanent, it looks to have the makings of an accident to me, and I've no difficulty imagining broken glass sink tops and tomato soup/red wine soaking into the seats.

It should be simple enough to DIY a shelf arrangement that clipped on to the vertical board behind your Adria's sink. You'd need to think about the seat's headrests and perhaps include in the design the ability to hinge the shelf up (or down) when you don't require the extra work-surface. Most important though would be to ensure it would be really firmly fixed and couldn't be accidentally knocked off.

I can't see the Rapido shelf arrangement being particularly helpful as (compared to your Adria) there are significant differences in the kitchen design, the seat design and the distance from kitchen work-surface to the top of the board behind the sink.

If your Adria's headrests are easily removable, I guess you might be able to exploit their fixings to support a shelf in their place, But you don't really want to be swapping the shelf and headrests about if it can be avoided. Nevertheless, I think I'd still be looking at the seat's headrests to see if I could attach some sort of metal bracket to them to support a highish-mounted shelf.

When you say about the shelf that you "...don't want it fixed permanently", I assume you mean that you are prepared to have something rough-and-ready as long as it can be removed before you someday sell the motorhome. This would be a reasonable attitude to take, but you could consider the shelf as a useful improvement that would be attractive to a future buyer. The vertical 'board' between the kitchen and seat looks pretty thick - thick and strong enough to accept 'sockets' in its top into which supports for a shelf could be inserted (ie. similar to how headrests usually plug into car front-seats). Perhaps worth considering...

Good points Derek.

We have the same vertical low wall behind the seats.

The headrests have a 'tongue' which slots into the top of the main cushion. However, if you take these out and slot in a DIY shelf you still have to store these headrests somewhere.

The Matrix doesn't have this problem as it has a very convenient (and large) wardrobe top close to the sink.

The lack of adequate surfaces to carry out the daily household kitchen tasks is a common problem across all makes and models. It's due to the compromises made by the designers between form and function.

I don't think Derek has revealed which model of "Sonic" he owns, but he has said that the photo Mel B provided earlier in this thread matches his motorhome's interior.

There's are 360-degree tours of Sonic models on the Adria website. The pictures showing headrest shapes and position that tally with Mel's photo indicate headrest fixings that differ from your description (ie. the headrests don't appear to slot into the top of the main cushion).

Based purely on the pictures in the tour, I'd be considering removing the headrest fixings, positioning flat metal brackety things where the fixings go and then screwing the headrest fixings back in place. The "brackety things" would be sandwiched between the headrest fixings and the 'board' behind the seat backrest, extending upwards to support the shelf. That way, the headrests could remain in place and the shelf would be securely fixed but be removable without leaving marks, unsightly screw-holes, etc. when necessary.

Lots of imponderables - it's just one approach. If I saw Derek's Adria, it's more than likely I'd immediately reject the idea as impracticable or unsatisfactory.

It's an Adria Sonic 1700 Sl on the shelf I was going to have an upstanding at the back to stop spills etc the main shelf coming forward above the sink glass sections so access to the sink is possible I have considered having 2 ends of the shelf having end pieces that hinge down with cutouts to slot over the bulkhead where forward seats are which would mean the whole thing could be removable but still at the drawing board thanks for the ideas

This one slots onto a rail that is attached to the 'wall', see instructions link below this for how it slots on:

And this one could easily have the top 'hook's altered to slip over the top of the rear 'wall' behind the sink and would be easy to store and clean:

There's also this which might suit depending on what weight you actually want to put on the shelf, simply adding a piece of thin board/cut down chopping board, could give you what you want:

There are a few 'options' in the Grundtal range so you could actually put something on the left above the corner section of the kitchen area too:

Forgot to say, in the meantime you could open up the top kitchen drawer at the right end of the sink and place a tray on it - that's what I've done in the past and it does work well so long as you make sure you don't need anything out of the drawer!! :D

Thanks for all the ideas folks

Im trying to find a way of haviong shelf up higher above wooden divider to forward facing seats and fixing it seems to be the problem without making unecessary holes for fixings as really want to make it removable - back to drawing board

Just an idea.

The legs should be as short as possible to raise shelf above sink cover when it is raised. Legs fold flat when not in use. Line area which contacts wall with felt to prevent scratching. Felt glued on. Raised back edge prevents things sliding off and falling onto seats.

Legs hinge inwards towards each other.
