fjmike
Last year our fridge/freezer struggled to keep cool when we were in the south of France so have decided to fit some additional 12 volt fans. My question is do I fit them on top or bottom vent???
Mickt
Top vent , they suck hot air out
lennyhb
Yep top vent easy way to fit them is to fit a couple of 12v computer type fans to the top vent with cable ties. I've fitted them to a couple of caravans in the past, first one with a thermal switch in line, second time I just fitted a switch in line and just turned them on on hot days and off at night. Guest JudgeMental
Have fitted to top vent in the past...presently just place the desktop fan against vent if very hot....
Derek Uzzell
There's a fitting article here http://www.caktanks.com/news/Fridge%20Vent%20Fan%20Caravan%20Magazine%20-%20July07.pdf GOOGLEing on "fridge cooling fan" will retrieve plenty of other related discussion (some of it needing to be treated with caution!) Inexpensive computer fans are often used, but choosing a kit would be simpler (and, with any luck, the fan-units will be more weather resistant). CAK Tanks market single- and twin-fan kits http://www.caktanks.com/files/cak_catalogue_2012/2012_CAK_Fridges.pdf and they are also available here http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/fantastic.htm (I've extracted the above from an earlier forum thread. The links still work, but I haven't checked if the adverts are still current.)
Guest JudgeMental
just a thought but make sure before you purchase a kit that there is room enough behind grill to fit it.
Guest 1footinthegrave
And if using pc fans make sure they are the right way round :-S
fjmike
Thanks for all your advice, have now ordered up a double fan kit after following Dereks link. I will let you know how I get on
Archiesgrandad
Just a thought, but is it better to put the fan at the bottom to push coldish air in and let the pressure force the hot air out of the top, or put the fan at the top in the stream of hot air and let the cold air find it's own way in? Brambles
Mickt - 2013-04-21 6:58 PM Top vent , they suck hot air out They are better in the top as Mickt has stated. If you place in the bottom then you are creating turbulance in the air and could affect the gas burner. Also you would be creating positive pressure and if there was any leaks to the inside of the motorhome you could push fumes into the habitation area. You also probably only need one fan and not two but seems most like to fit two.

Interesting...if your sure one enough you can get a PC fan for less then a fiver, a switch and fuse and a pretty easy DIY job. £35 for a twin fan set up a bit much, I had one and it fell to bits when I tried to move it to 3rd van
Derek Uzzell
There's a "top or bottom" discussion here: http://www.touringandtenting.com/forums/index.php?/topic/38093-fridge-cooling-fans/ Me, I would have thought that fitting the fan(s) behind the upper ventilation grille is the obvious thing to do. These appliances cool by air rising naturally from lower to upper grille and the fan(s) just augment that process. There's another installation article here http://www.a-tconsulting.co.uk/caravan_tech/fanfit.html relating to a more DIY approach using Maplin-sourced bits.
