Making caravans lighter by using new materials.

Hi to you all out there. There have been some quite dramatic improvements in weight reduction of caravans in the last few years but it is my belief that there is still a long way to go.

The most notable and inherent methods of reduction has got to be at the manufacturing stage and very quickly followed by the manufacturers of after-market accessories and essentials.

The increased use of lighter materials than timber and especially particle board/MDF is a first port of call. I wonder how much weight was actually saved when the Swift Group moved over to the use a moulded under-bed box for their fixed beds albeit grey and not very attractive. A grained wood effect would have been a great deal more pleasing to the eye.

Areas of low stress such as high level cupboard carcases and door fronts  could easily be made of high impact polycarbonate.
