Carpets up or down?

Carpets for us & WHY not ?

Can't understand the logic of buying a Motorhome with carpets, only to put them in storage & buy cheaper replacements. Then to but the originals back when selling the Motorhome. Strange IMO.

Never heard of any dealer offering higher trade-in because original unused carpets available / or lower trade-in because no carpets fitted. Many of the Dealers staff don't know sufficient about the products to determine if there should be carpets anyway. Or at least that is the inference from many Buyers comments.

(Same as many additional accessories they make no difference to Trade-in values)

You've paid for the carpets so use them if you want carpets, but don't store for next owner to benefit from or for a perceived higher trade-in. value.

Carpets all the way for us. A quick brushing every few days, while away and five minutes with the vac when we get home and they look like new.

A compromise would be to glue a piece of carpet to the bottom of your flip flops or crock and leave the original carpets in the loft... (Yes I am kidding...)

Totally agree with you. We sweep carpets while away. When we get home, as we mainly only use van for the main holiday, and not at other times, we give them a shampoo, with the Vax wet and dry, gets all the dirt and any stains out, Don't see the point of covering seats either, unless you have a dog, that gets on them, but IMO dogs should stay on the floor

My wife covers the carpet rear the door with old copies of the Daily Telegraph when the weather is wet to protect the carpets.

best place for the telegraph, blooming tory rag. Very absorbant though,I should think ? Ray

Must say I agree with flicka. I don’t see the point of paying for carpeting, good upholstery etc. only to remove or cover it.

We obviously look after the ‘van but we use all of its facilities, the result is just fair wear and tear. It just so happens that our last three pvcs did not come with full carpeting in the living area so we use rugs as we find them more convenient..

I always take them up and store them, they are usually such stupid light colours anyway that they are impractical especially with 3 dogs!

Instead I've cut to shape in a few sections a large dirt grabber mat, the rubber back type with cotton twill tufts which can be put in a washing machine and we use these most of the time, if, however, it is very hot we can easily take them up and store the beneath the dog bed which is under the dinette table as they take up very little room when laid flat (rather than rolled up), we then just leave a smaller dirt grabber rug down to wipe dusty shoes on.

When we had the 'indoor water feature' recently due to the sink waste pipe coming off the bottom of the kitchen sink and the contents of my just emptied washing up bowl sploshed about everywhere, it was a real boon to be able to remove the dirt grabber mat sections and be able to dry them out in the sun the following day as it dried much quicker than any 'original' removable carpeting would have. As the mats are rubber backed it also meant that a lot of the water was 'trapped' on the top of them rather than soaking through them and onto the floor etc.

We have used the original removable carpeting in a previous van but found it just held the dirt and dog hairs and was an absolute pain to keep clean so NOT using the originals actually makes life easier for us, plus when we come to change the van in the future it will make it look nicer and the next owner may use them normally, so what's the point in spoiling them for the sake of it?

We had carpets down in the last one but they got dirty duo took them up and lived with it for a while put runners down, dealer didn't even ask for them when he gave trade in price, they make so much money on the deal anyway, what's a couple of hundred for them to replace them for the next deal?

We use them in our new van too, with a couple of runners, we don't like cold feet in the wee hours getting up to have a wee! ;-)

Well, we're back from a few days in Herefordshire - gorgeous countryside and cider - and three days at the Great Dorset Steam Fair. Not convinced that having the mats up was a good idea. It worked well on the CC site, giving us easy access to the underfloor storage [we have double floors] and for storing cider. It worked less well at the GDSF as there was so much dust that came into the van and no carpet to act as a trap. Also meant when we walked around on the floor, we ended up with dusty feet and hands - as we fished out the cider.

The last caravan we had we threw the carpets in the loft, what we did notice over 6 years of use the vinyl floor gained quite a lot of scratches from sand and grit being trodden in.

When we brought the Motorhome the boss decided we would try carpets again, they turned out to be not very practicable, heavy difficult to clean and expensive (300€). Last year I replaced them using gel backed carpet, looks better than the original carpets, half the weight only cost 40 quid plus a couple of hours work & when they get scruffy cheap to replace.

Using a hoover is fine when you are home based but not a lot of good when travelling a lot.

Handheld hoovers are next to useless for proper cleaning so for us no carpets and a brush work well.

as said before ours are 'Up' washable runners 'down' kept clean with =

These are good, but expensive:

found this one to be just as good (if you are on EHU) and much cheaper.

one of the 'Hidden costs' of having a dog. (lol) Ray
