Help, where can I buy a bonnet release cable?

Took van for MOT today, it passed no probs, but they advised that the bonnet release cable is almost at the end of its life, and don't think it will stand being opened many more times :-( I asked them to replace it while they had the van in, but apparently there is no part listed anymore. This is a 1995 boxer, with low mileage and full service history, it has years of life left in it, but what am I supposed to do with it now? I'll be unable to fill the washer bottle or check the oil etc etc. Does anybody know where I might get hold of one? Thankyou

Josie

Look for a local mobile mechanic, I am sure if you buy one , they would fit for you. If not I would have thought that any competant DIY'er could do it

Seems odd that your garage said it needs replacing, but not prepaid to do it?, Perhaps they want to get one and charge you some exobitant price for it, ??

good idea to get a mobile mechanic. Re the garage, I think it is because they can't guarantee the repair with second hand parts. They did say it might be possible to fabricate one, but don't suppose they would ever have got around to it. To be fair, they are usually very helpful, but its a national company and I suppose they are bound by whatever the head office tells them *-)

Hi Josie,

I have just been looking into this and the cable for RHD vehicles is discontinued by Fiat however the LHD version is still available.

Before giving up completely I would contact a Peugeot dealer and ask for a Boxer 350 1994 to 2002 RHD cable in case there are any knocking about at their parts depot in the UK.

I also wonder how different the LHD one could be? I might be tempted to have a go at modifying one of those because they can't be completely different or much shorter/longer.

Finally; get the old one removed and take it to a bicycle repair shop. One end is just a barrel (like on a brake caliper) and the other is bare wire that you bend around the lock and secure it with a crimp.

For the record; the right hand drive cable part number from Fiat is 1307672080 and the left hand drive is 1305671080.

I do have one on the shelf but am scared to let it go! I also have at least one used one on a parts van but they were notoriously crap and we had to replace loads of them back in the day so I don't hold out much hope that used ones would be any use.

Try the Peugeot dealer first, then the bike shop.

Thankyou for that Nick. Apparently mine is really badly frayed, so don't know if it could be repaired, even by a bike shop! I rang to see what condition the one in the link above was in, unfortunately it is not even like the picture, he says it is a solid type of cable, but is convinced it would fit? He offered to throw in the catch for free. Do you think that could work? I will try the Peugeot dealers, but don't know if they can search a national database or just their own stock?

You don't need to be 'afrayed'!

The cable is just a piece of twisted cable like that used for bike brakes or gears. It runs inside a metal spiral wrapped in plastic. The metal of the outer cable usually corrodes and causes the inner to stick; this is the most common reason for the cable to be replaced. Either that or stretching caused by a poorly adjusted catch and over-enthusiastic pulling of the release inside the cab.

If you cable end is just frayed it can be repaired before it breaks with some solder and even can have a new piece spliced on to the end and secured by crimping. If the garage has even half a clue they should be able to sort this out!

Peugeot dealers can first check their own stock, then attempt to order it from the UK warehouse. If this is unsuccessful they can then do a dealer stock inquiry which will check whether any other dealer has one showing as available. Although all of these vehicles came out of the Sevel factory in Italy, parts were kept in France by Peugeot/Citroen and there may be one there if the part is not clearly discontinued. The Fiat system tells me that it is no longer available and further checks revealed that there is no stock nor can any be obtained from Italy.

Thankyou for the very comprehensive replies Nick, at least I feel there is some hope now. I was so worried that if I could never open the bonnet again, the van would be a write off! The garage did say they had to be extremely careful with it this morning and that if it broke, I would be unable to open it again 8-) I will try all the things you suggest and hopefully will be able to get it sorted one way or the other. I'll let you know how I get on, but thanks again, you've been very helpful!

Nice one Colin.

How is your van? Still good i hope.

Nick

We've used speedy for years, mostly for specialised aircraft cables. If it was a loop and clamp end I'd make it up myself, we have facilities to make and test up to 30cwt aircraft cables.

The vans running well, at first it was only returning low 20s mpg, but it's back up to high 20s mpg now. I've made up a mesh filter to discourage/stop the mice getting into the induction system, so fingers crossed shouldn't happen again.

Then I think Speedy Cables is the way to go. I suggest you give them a ring and ask what they will need. I assume they will say just send them the old cable and they will pattern it.

It will mean leaving your van parked for a while, as with the cable removed you will need to disable the bonnet latch - or you'll have great fun trying to open it again when the new cable arrives! :-)

Either get a friend or a mobile mech to remove the cable intact, removing the latch at the same time. When the new cable is delivered they can put both back and adjust accordingly. It should be fairly straightforward - apart from the swearing! :-D

....if that is indeed the correct part number (and not for LHD) then it may be available in France (for a Citroen, rather than Peugeot) here:

....and it looks from their Ts&Cs like they will ship (but you would need to go through the initial purchase process to be sure).

Thankyou Robin, sorry have only just seen your post.

Managed to source a secondhand cable, not the same but for the later model. Not being particularly good at DIY, found someone prepared to fit it/adapt it for us. He did and when we got it back, he showed us the old cable, not frayed at all, not even the type of cable that would fray, and he wondered why we'd been told it needed replacing >:-( Could it be that the same garage had just carried out a full service for us (or had they) and told us not to risk opening the bonnet because we might notice that they hadn't done the work???? Feeling really angry and hurt now, as have used said garage for many years.

Without wishing to jump to conclusions, it does make you wonder?

I'd certainly be taking the removed cable to them..and asking what all the "don't open your bonnet" lark was about!? 8-)

I understand your feelings completely.

There is one good thing that has come from this though and that is that we all know now that the later cable will fit and do the job. That is valuable info considering the old cable is discontinued; so you have done a lot of people a good turn. Thanks.

Although this means that i won't be able to get £100 for my original one when i put it on ebay !! :D
