hi all. Its wet and cold so we are thinking of warmer times and places to go.We are off to Spain in Feb with that in mind I have been looking at a digital camera recorder to record the driving time and what could happen if court in a Spanish scam or accident. Your views would be appreciated. *-)

Guest Had Enough

I've had a Blackvue for 18 months and it's superb. It's high definition and uses GPS to determine your location and speed and provides an accurate record of everything. It records on a micro SD card that runs for 4 hours and then re-records over the last recording. If I have anything that I want to save I carry a spare SD card and just swap them.

It records in one-minute segments so that it 's easy to save just the video of the accident or incident and makes it easy to email the relevant section.

If you view it on a PC it opens a Google Earth window so that you can see all the GPS info. It also has an app for my smartphone so I can slip the SD card into that and view the video immediately.

Mine came with two mounts and I swap it between my motorhome and my private car. I had it wired in for my car for about £25 but in my motorhome I was able to run the cabling up the edge of the window and into the dashboard 12v socket.

I think that my model is discontinued as this one looks a little different but the spec is the same.

There are cheaper ones available and some record front and rear view at the same time.

I can guarantee that in ten years these will be a part of every decent car's specification, just like sat-nav now. Insurers will insist on them.

These type of cameras will definately become standard in vehicles in 10 years time. Just like most cars have a radio these days.

I use a DVR300, just love the way it gives you a GPS map view of where you have been.

Would this camera go on a "A" class screen or would it need to be dash mounted?

Thanks

I bought a real cheap and nasty camera from ebay for just over £16, plus extra for the sd card. Actually works surprisingly well and the quality is good enough to pick out details, number plates etc, in the event of a prang.

My camera is like this one:

There is an example of a much better camera in use here:

He has several videos of aires etc using a camera that was about the £90 mark I think.

It can be windscreen mounted.

We use a Roadhawk which gives video, road position on Google earth, speed etc with 3 sensors that register impact. and most importantly will record an impact before and after it happens as a separate video.

Has been reliable and in constant use over 2 years with no problems. Windscreen mounted and we have a sucker mount which can be used in a hire car.

Roadpro are selling dash / screen cams below £100, and most of their kit is reliable.

Word of warning, like most things you only get what you pay for. I had a cheap camera first of all, but turned out to be a waste of money.

Take a couple of spare cards, it is useful to change them to ensure you can keep captured video safe.
