Satellite TV not a total loss but almost

With the ITV and Ch4 group moving to Astra 2E and F "Spot Beams" tonight /early Tuesday much of the southern part of Europe will lose the "National" broadcasters from the UK - there are some "Hot spots" here and there but reports are coming in of reduced or no signals from the "UK Spot Beams" in Spain. Portugal and losses in parts of Germany, Denmark, Austria and Italy as well as Greece even with massive dishes which could not be carried in a motorhome.

The one bright spot is that the BBC "Red button 2" service is on a "Pan European" beam with the frequency 12552 Vertical, Symbol Rate 22000 (22/0 on a Sky box) FEC is 5/6.

Hi Chris

BBC Red Button 2 is the name - It can be reached with a Sky or Freeview Box by pressing the red button and selecting the menu for sports or whatever they have chosen to show as an extrs to the normal programming. However by entering the Frequency and Symbol rate and FEC shown above you can add this as a channel to a Sky box or free to air box and view it even ehen you can't get the BBC normal services from which you could press the red button.

Sports and movies including the HD variants are all on the "Pan European" beams at the moment. However - BT Sport 1 and 2 (and HD), Setanta and SONY Movies are all on the "UK Spot" Beam.

The Sky default transponder of 11778 V is still on the Astra 2A satellite at the moment but that satellite will go out of service when Astra 2G is in place in the summer. - Given the frequency it will likely go to the "Pan European" beam which will make it easier to tune in southern Europe to the satellite.
