rapido girl
Hi Folks - I was wondering if anyone out there has been to watch a leg or more of the Mille Miglia. I would appreciate any tips or advice as I am planning a trip to Italy at that time. Thanks
Zydeco Joe
Could be a good reason for a trip or part of a tour seeing all the old vintage cars plus a visit to Venice as that's not far from the start of the Mille Miglia in mid May. Have fun. :-D
HymerVan
In 2009 we came across the Mille Miglia in Florence, completely by chance. Seeing old cars racing through a densely populated area overtaking buses and other "ordinary" traffic with virtually no intervention from the accompanying police was pretty exciting. I've been to various Italian cities and witnessed this phenomenon. Didn't realise it was part of a race though. ??

Oh, but it was, see here: http://tinyurl.com/d4gkdg A friend's father, sadly now dead, competed in the 1956 Mille Miglia (won by Ferrari at an average speed of 137kph!) in a D.B. HBR Panhard, but crashed out - nearly provoking a divorce that would probably have denied me ever meeting him, or my friend, or the D.B.!

I just meant to say that, as far as I can see, they drive like that all the time. :-D
Brian Kirby
Sorry Chris, I did miss the irony! Driving in Italy is great fun, and gets even more fun the further south you go. I think the rules are understood only by the Italians, so I generally leave them to it and just sit and watch! :-)
gocro
It's not a race, now it's a series of time trials (supposedly) after many drivers and bystanders were killed over the years.
JohnP
In the 60's The Shell and BP film service had a series of historic films covering this event on free loan. I wonder if they are still available, maybe on dvd.
