Pampam
Judgemental :- i think ive read that you owned a westfalia ,could you recomend these or do you think they are now to old to have as a runabout vehicle? I think one of these might fill my "void" now my van has gone ,we could still get about a bit and it wouldnt cost the earth and my husband could still enjoy a long haul hol :thanks pp :)
colin
My last van was a T25 which I converted to a campervan. For over ten years it was my daily 'commuting' vehicle. Mine was a 1.9l petrol water cooled 'low top', never quite managed to get 30mpg from it, I so liked driving it I did consider getting a newer T4/T5 combi last year. Personally I feel as a every day vehicle the T25 is getting a bit long in the tooth.
Pampam
Colin i think your correct and they are perhaps getting on abit for an everyday vehicle ,and i would probably have to keep my car :which kind of defeats the object :i do like them tho they remind me of my old workvan that was a lwb hiace with column change ,no heater and hole in floor it had a funny clutch cos the guy before me had half a leg missing ,i loved to drive that van!which is odd cos i dont really like driving :cheers pp :)
Guest JudgeMental
Ah but that was then..this is now. there are far better specified vans around offering much more. But a few questions first. you both work, both have cars, van will replace a car, do yo go to a fixed place of work daily that has a car park, and lastly the budget. If I was looking for a van to use daily it would be the 5.4 metre globecar/possl Road Camp R. can be specified with pop top roof as well. but its a full spec camper with shower/toilet room and offers so much more than a VW but won't fit under height barrier. you can still get westfalias, the company is thriving, and plenty of used about. look on recent Vixters thread, I linked to a few westys on there http://tinyurl.com/onwu2zr this looks decent, around 20K: http://www.autoscout24.de/caravaning/wohnmobile/westfalia/ possl road camp R http://www.poessl-mobile.de/modelle/roadcamp-r/
Derek Uzzell
As JudgeMental says, the Westfalia company still exists and currently builds 4 models on the Fiat Ducato, one model on a VW and one model on a Ford Transit Custom. http://www.westfalia-mobil.net/en/ The present UK Westfalia agent is Lowdhams http://www.lowdhams.com/new-westfalia-motorhomes A smallish Westfalia alternative to a VW-based model would be a Ford-based Westfalia "Nugget" as described on these websites http://westfalia-ford.co.uk/ http://www.practicalmotorhome.com/review/motorhome/2008-westfalia-nugget Westfalia interior designs tend to be 'innovative' which, for older vehicles, could well make obtaining replacement parts difficult. You'd probably be better looking at, say, a Bilbos-made vehicle where spare parts should be more readily available.
Guest JudgeMental
Mine was a T25 like Colins (always thought it a T3) but a 2.1 injection with a/c etc...it was a USA import. similar to this one on ebay, but in white. still plenty around... seem to have doubled in price though:-S although it was LHD, wife used it daily for dropping kids off and going to work, over 6 years with no problems, and only needed a new expansion chamber, and an exhaust box. sold it for what I payed for it 6.5K.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1990-Volkswagen-T25-Westfalia-California-Vanagon-1600cc-TD-/231177813803?pt=UK_Campers_Caravans_Motorhomes&hash=item35d3457f2b now I would look at the T4/T5 or better still what I suggested earlier, the roadcamp R. German dealer some of us use has 2013 models for approx £30K. they are a new design so earlier examples not available unfortunately

Guest pelmetman
If I recall correctly Pam............. you didn't want to spend a lot of money again, but wanted something with a loo and shower ;-)........ http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1990-TALBOT-HARMONY-AUTOSLEEPER-EXPRESS-PEUGEOT-WHITE-CAMPERVAN-LOW-MILEAGE-/171300706744?pt=UK_Campers_Caravans_Motorhomes&hash=item27e25159b8 Low mileage, low price as it needs a bit of bodywork to make it really nice............you could try it, and if you don't like it, put it back on ebay and get your money back B-)................ Are classic now and price getting higher, brought mine with knackered clutch sold it on 14 years later with knackered engine for same price. Did you not notice Eddie, the van you highlighted was also a 1990 ;-)...................except yours was a twendy wendy VW priced at 15.5K and mine was less than 5k...........plus mine was built by Autosleepers before they dumbed down on their quality and followed the herd *-)...................and the A/S also had a proper bog and shower :D............ It would be useful if Pam gave us an idea of her budget ;-)........ Just noticed yours has got 152k on the clock.........mine only 52k :D................ Pampam
Hello thanks for bothering to answer : my budget if i bought this year would only be £6,000 - £10,000 if i wait till next year (summer) £10,000-£20,000 ,i think i just miss having a van to getaway in so was looking on ebay at all the vans on there i do like the vw westfalia (but to be sensible they might be to old for owners who havent got a clu about mechanics) anyhow if i bide my time as my husband suggests i keep looking and learning and picking your brains on here thanks pp :) the van looks great judge but sadly out of my price range thanks pp:)
Pampam
There does seem to be more choice and cheaper in germany when you look on the www.autoscout ebay pp:)
Guest JudgeMental
probably best to wait till you have a better budget. If you can get a decent westy for around £12K, which you should be able to, it will hold its price well. and you can sell on when you feel like upgrading. try some silly offers but get them checked out properly, they are still being built?? many T4 and T5 around, but I prefer te classic rear engine T3 plenty here from 10K up to present day 70K varietys http://tinyurl.com/mh7r7ok
Guest JudgeMental
This looks pretty good, and in Swansea. just agree a price subject to passing an MOT, if he dont agree forget it! (similar to mine sob...sob :-D) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131159554080?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 like this one..looks immaculate but on a Ford, from a good dealer...... Germans favour hardtops, more practical with our weather as well. http://tinyurl.com/pm2n6fv

Nice to see your finding quality classic campers though B-).................
