EHIC Changes to Cover

Not sure if this has been raised, did a search but pulled nothing of use.

I have found to my cost, though I am in dispute as my treatment was prior to the date, that as of 01/07/2014 the EHIC (new version of E111) no longer allows you to recover any expenditure at EU doctors, or EU health facilities Prior to this date you were able to claim back from the NHS the bulk of your expenditure at EU health facilities, now the EHIC only gives you the same conditions as local people and you will no longer be able to claim a reimbursement to our standard. See

whilst some may not consider this important I have just had to spend £130 on doctors appointment, blood tests etc. and drugs (anti-biotic, pain killers and anti-viral) after falling ill unexpectedly. Also this is not covered by holiday insurance as they don't cover ordinary 'GP' type care and besides have a £100 excess.

For your information.

Thanks for this info Bas. Looking at Spain I find "The EHIC also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions, ". What does this mean? Do I need to declare to my current insurers any pre-existing conditions as they are covered and where at present they load a considerable premium?

Health insurance for travellers covers more than just medical treatment - such as repatriation costs - so if any non declared pre-existing condition incurred any non medical costs, I doubt if your insurers would pay up.

I believe as Malc has already said that although the EHIC covers any treatment you need it will be as the local population receives it and any costs incurred will be down to you. Following that line a local person would not expect to be repatriated to the UK so that wouldn't be covered and would be a quite considerable cost I would think!

Also I would imagine that in the event that you didn't state pre existing conditions that might well give them a get out for any other treatment you might require, I don't know as I am not an insurance specialist but I do have an inherent mistrust of insurance companies!

A friend of mine who thought travel insurance was a bit of a con. But always bought it,was taken ill in Norway recently, his insurance company flew out a doctor from London, flew him back to London, took him by ambulance to his home,

EHIC would not cover you for any of this!
