Sparky7
There have been a few incidents reported of Fiat locking fuel caps being stolen. The key is the same as the ignition key.Villains then clone keys from the locks on the caps and return to steal the motorhome.Fiat seem unable to supply a locking fuel cap for some reason, but they can obtain a set of locks for you.Cost around £26.00.One of these can be used to change the existing lock on your fuel cap. This means carrying yet another key, but it does offer peace of mind! Lizzy
I think the industry should take this into account when building new models! There must be places we can get new fuel caps with separate keys - I had to do so many years ago when I lost a set of keys .......... but it didn't cost *that* much! mags
I bought a fuel cap from a local Motor Factor - I told them it was for a Fiat Ducato so they ordered one for me - cost £9.99 !! It's a smaller key than the fiat one so it's not too bad on the keyring.
Sparky7
Ta for reply.I too bought one of these to start with, but unfortunately it didn't fit my 1999 Ducato 14!
Sparky7
Thanks for response.I entirely agree with you that the industry should use a bit of joined up thinking on security!
bjphillips
I had a word with my local Fiat dealer & he seems to think that even if a key was made from a fuel cap it wouldn't start the engine because its chipped ! Who's right on this one there must be a knowledgable expert out there somewhere (?)
Dave Newell
Your Fiat dealer is correct, the ignition key contains a transponder that the engine management/immobilizer reads, if it's not the right one then the engine no go brum brum. What the key will allow the thieves to do is to get into your motorhome and overcome the steering lock which would allow them to tow it away. D. howie
A bit off thread, but the latest wheeze around here is having your number plates pinched. These are then stuck on another car, taken to the petrol station where they fill the tank and drive off without paying. Howard.
Supertractorman
Two years ago I had a phone call from the Police saying I had driven off without paying for fuel at a garage in Yorkshire. They had video footage of a car identical to mine in colour with same reg. Fortunately was able to prove I was at a business meeting in Bristol at the time, and covered by their CCTV. Police checked my car and saw I had a Derbyshire Dales parking permit in the window which was not on that car. But it was a lot of hassle, and no number plates stolen.
