Lizzy
We got stuck on Bastille day many years ago - the troops were returning from the Falklands Conflict so our crossing was delayed by 40+ mins: when we got to Calais it was dark, we were last off and there was chaos on land due to celebrations. Have a look at the various web-sites for Eurostar, channel ferries etc. - booking extra early might enable you to get a better discount too. Your local tourist shop might help also. Do you stay local to the parades I would love to go and pay respect. Have you found anything yet wayne?
twooks
We've been along the Normandy beaches and also WW1 areas several times - but never on D-Day anniversaries. There always seem to be groups of Americans and occasionally Canadians there. I find it all unbelievably depressing - especially the sight of all those names on the Menin Gate. Can't believe that we have learned absolutely nothing from all those deaths, well, maybe we have, but unfortunately the likes of Teflon and GW haven't and are still sending people to their deaths in pursuit of their place in history - and oil as well of course.
