sean.clarke
Further proof that monopolies are bad! Has anyone else booked a Portsmouth ferry and been shocked at the price? Last week we were weighing up plans for a trip in late May, previously had been by both tunnel and Pompey ferry, however with DFDS pulling out it seems the price is just taking the Michael. Ok, so we have a rather large van and the local (to us) ferries are more expensive than the tunnel, but with some trips the convenience was worth the extra, however now it looks like it is heading to near £550 for us to cross!! Sod that, we'll take the tunnel!! Even for Paris the tunnel would be quicker, but with young ones the ferry breaks up the journey, from memory DFDS was just over half that. And don't even enquire about the ferry to Spain..... ??
Brian Kirby
Have you investigated Newhaven Dieppe? It is about half way to Dover, so a shorter drive in UK. Reasonable roads from Dieppe.

Reasonable roads from Dieppe. Hi Brian, thanks for the reply - always appreciated. Yes, for this particular excursion the 23:00 sailing was full just leaving the 17:xx sailind - accounting for traffic etc. on the first leg to Paris the total travel time is less heading to Dover for the tunnel. If we could have made the late Newhaven sailing the time could be offset with the little ones sleeping - however even that was £325(ish) - again, if the young ones could have slept on the late crossing them the cost/benefit would have tipped in its favour. sean.clarke
Thanks BB, looks like you managed to get a good deal. I too looked at the CC prices, they were what I was quoting, and with young ones at school a Thursday crossing not be on the cards. I suspect also that the prices are inflated on the Friday as that is the Friday before the school holidays (although comparing it with the DFDS prices previously, that too was the Friday before the hols, albeit at Easter). Still, good to see it worked for you.
