Problems with Air Rides. Help please.

Had Air Rides for years but when I tried to inflate this time there was a loud "whoosh" and the dial on the gauge shot round. I am on holiday in Cornwall at present and can't find anyone who fits them. However, several men have looked and the consensus is that it is the gauge that is the problem. So far a search on the internet has not produced the name of a fitter near to Worcestershire, although someone mentioned a firm in Birmingham but no name was given. Can anyone help please? I will try to attach a photo.

Are those valves closed?

Yes they are in that picture but I had opened the red one to put air in. At least I think it was that one but it is over a week ago now.

Thank you Dave for your suggestion. I didn't know Dave Newell did air rides now - will give him a ring when I have signal on my phone!

The Airide website carries a Poole, Dorset address, but I’m not sure if the company still trades...

Although Outdoor Bits used to be suppliers of Airide air-suspension kits, it would appear from their website that this is no longer the case.

However, it would be worth you checking if they could still supply a replacement gauge.

From your photo it looks like the gauge merely screws into the top of the unit’s main metal ‘body' and, if the gauge were removed and replaced with a suitable threaded blanking plug, you could still inflate the air bellows and check the inflation-pressure via an ordinary tyre gauge.

Plainly it will be more satisfactory if you can source a like-for-like replacement gauge quickly, but a plugging ‘fix’ would give you breathing space to locate a gauge. I suspect that the gauge’s threaded connector is fairly standardised, so plugging the hole might well prove straightforward to do.

If your present gauge’s connector type can be accurately identified, it's likely that an equivalent gauge can be obtained quite cheaply. This is an example of a 100psi gauge

(I need to emphasise that I have no idea if that particular gauge could be used with your system, as I don’t know what connector-type your present gauge has. A 100psi gauge should be OK for a motorhome air-bellows system, but it’s the connector-type that’s the vital factor as far as replacement is concerned.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you all for your help re my air-ride suspension and apologies for the delay in replying but have not had internet access for several days. It appears that Air-rides are no longer in business and, despite a thorough internet search I can find no link to them. Outdoor Bits no longer fit them and the man there said perhaps they have been taken over by someone else.

Anyway the short story is that I was recommended to visit Castle Mill near Cheddar which is an MOT center. The man who looked to be in charge came out and looked at the problem and I explained what had happened. I showed him the pump that I normally use (compressor?) which has its own gauge. So he told me to ignore the gauge on the fittings and to just use that one on the pump. 5 minutes later all fixed and working. I could not believe my luck that I had found someone who knew what to do. So thanks again and I hope that my tale will help someone else with the same problem.
