Italian toll roads

Yes they do but it is much cheaper tha France and is 100% worth it as avoiding the coastal autostrada will take about 10 times as long - NOT KIDDING!

edit, slightly misread your post re car toll charges, motorhome rate about one third of France, still a no brainer.

We took the road from the French border as far as La Spezia - brilliant but painfully slow. Villages every few miles so if you take it be prepared for slow progress.

From La Spezia we went on the toll road to Pisa, €13.70 for a 6 metre van and worth every penny.

I believe Italy was the first country in Europe to get motorways - in the 1930's, so the non motorway road network hasn't been developed so much
