Hi folks, what a difference around Sarlat..we were here 30 years ago, and remember the small country roads leading to the old town..

Horrified to see surrounding approach roads with massive new Leclerc superstore..what on earth has happened to the old worldy feel of the place we used to remember..gave up trying to get to the Aire..and apart from a topup at Leclerc, promptly about faced and departed..

currently on campsite alongside river about 5 mile away from the town..back towards Souillac...a municipal?

is old sarlat still in existence lost in the jungle of redevelopment..?

I tried the aire at Souillac last year but found a lot of travellers' vans on there. Didn't feel safe so went on the campsite there. Pitches are small and had a job to get on one but it was in the evening. Nice to walk along the river with the dog and felt much safer there. I think it was about €12 but could have been more. After two nights went on the Castel site up the hill - nice site but expensive.

Tony, Sarlat old town is still there and still as magical as ever in the evening when lit by the old gas lights. Yes it is touristy and there maybe some supermarkets on the entry roads but it is still a great place to visit. We were there two years ago and will maybe visit again later this year and enjoy a nice meal and glass or two of wine on a warm evening. Regarding the aire then we are happy to stay on it as can walk into town, no sites are close enough to do this, but many do not like it. It gets very full, so you will be parked close, it is, of the pass the salt please genre, is adjacent to a main road and backs onto a cemetery. So may not be for you Tony. Hope info helps.

Progress is spoiling everywhere.

Toured the potholed gravel roads of the Norwegian fjords in 1971.

Went back 30 years later and there's tarmac everywhere.

Trouble is that everywhere that is ' developed ' attracts more visitors - which is likely to ruin the original attraction.

;-)

The French who live there presumably dont want to live in a tourist trap chocolate box and maybe appreciate the out of centre developments.

Hi Tony, if you're on the municipal over the bridge that is camping le bourniou, our second home practically.

Been going for nigh on 10 years, absolutely love the area and the 'allo allo' Village is wonderful.

Martyn

Martyn, is this campsite in walking distance or on bus route to Sarlat? If so would be happy to use it if not then although aire is not the best will stick to that as main reason for going is to visit Sarlat. (Also yes aire can be tight but have always been able to open doors !!).

It depends on how far you are able and prepared to walk.

We found a site last year in the ACSI Camping Card (Discount ) book which although up a hill was easy enough for us and many other folks on the site to walk into town and back. The site is still in the book (1603 on p 162) although the description of "just 10 minutes walk from the historic centre" is a little unrealistic but not enough to put off many campers of various ages and levels of fitness. It was also a lovely site on which to relax and even have a swim in either the indoor or open air pool.

Have to say that a lot of the info in ACSI is very ambiguous. Just got back from 8 weeks using only ACSI sites. I think that the conditions change in the site, but the acsi do not amend the book. ONe site was supposed to have a special area for MH, but they had now built cabins and the MH area is for the use of the cabin renters for parking, and the bourne is no more. Another site wa said to have Chemical loo emptying?? When we asked where? we where show a manhole cover , just lift and empty, no flushing, and it went into the rainwater drains. (Did not use it) 2 mins to village? (IF you have a car!) SO don't take all the book says as gospel. Must say we found a couple of little gems though
