We spent a week or so on the free aire at Col D'Ibarden here https://goo.gl/maps/3hGpx which is about 6 miles up in the hills from St Jean (no services). Its officially in Spain and there are loads of shops up the hill selling all sorts of goods. Great walking in the hills around there. We toured the whole area up to Bayonne and down to St Sabastian on the scooter.

Martyn, Col D'Ibarden is not for the fainthearted if you don't like heights, very steep climb and narrow bends.

Are we talking about the same place? its only 1000ft above sea level and there are coaches going up and down all day. The road is completely fine.

Ditto, nothing wrong with the road at all. We bought some lovely Port and Brandy there, so much cheaper than France just 15 yards away, and we were a little surprised to see Cannabis seeds on sale , and all the paraphernalia needed to grow them, I was tempted purely for medicinal purposes of course, but the missus reminded me of the movie Midnight express lol.

Cheers again, no, definitely do NOT want or need Blackpool/Benidorm experiences :)

Sites quiet is ok too, essentially looking for a couple of locations to meet the basics, shop, restaurant, bar.

Can't be that difficult. He says 8-)

Anything else, weather, attractions that are open would be a bonus.

Martyn

Try Brantome Martyn ;-) ..............

I second that.

A couple of aires here if needed, one by the supermarket on the way out of Brantome direction Perigueux.

The campsite looks good though.

A couple of chateaux worth seeing around here - Dournezac (taking you away from your route though) and Jumilhac le Grand, plenty of others about but you can get close to these.

Theres a good quiet aire at a village called St Front la Riviere - via Champagnac de Belair, token from the mairie for elec, might be 2 euros, although it was free when i stopped there once.

Superb restarant in the next village - St Pardoux la Riviere - Hotel de ville

Hotel Charbonnel too in Brantome.

If you like your red wine get yourself a nice Percharment pay circa 8euros +

Making me want to go now!

If your heading down the south west corner as said Biarritz is great. St Jean du Luz is even nicer though. The whole stretch between the two towns is worth exploring. There will be plenty going on and the weather should be good.

You can fill up and empty for free on the Aire at St Jean du Luz but its officially the worst Aire in France. TGV train track on one side and 4 lane carriage way on the other. We spent a week or so on the free aire at Col D'Ibarden here https://goo.gl/maps/3hGpx which is about 6 miles up in the hills from St Jean (no services). We were there in September last year and it was 28c and sunny every day. We saw plenty of cheap campsites around St Jean and up the coast, 12-15 Euros in September.

Also on the way down there are a couple of big lakes in Landes. Sanguinet and Gastes. A Few good lakeside Aires there. Dune du Pyla is worth a look as well. (largest sand dune in Europe) Walk up the steps then throw yourself off the top. :D

Barry, agree harder to find a worse aire to stay on than this one. Note that now charges 2€ for water or 1hour electricity and 4 to 6€ to stay overnight!!! Town is really worth visit, we tend to take train from Henday Place station whilst staying on aire just opposite.
