Closed M20?

We returned yesterday from the Continent via the Tunnel. Considering the chaos, we got off lightly just a slow trip along the A16 to the Tunnel Terminal and a train an hour later than our booked time. On the A16 we passed 11 miles of double-parked lorries but the outside lane was kept open.

The worst problem for us was the closed M20. Can't understand why one lane wasn't left open - as the French did with the A16 - does anyone know why this is not possible on the M20? Both motorways are two lanes plus hard shoulder.

.

Why is it on the Continent when there's an accident on a M way the Police clear it and get the traffic moving ASAP, over here the M way is closed for hours!!

Possibly Health & Safety? because of all the "Cops with Cameras".."Motorway Cops".."Police Interceptors" etc type film crews swarming all over the carriageways?... :-S

HGV drivers are stranded for 24 hours or more on the motorways.

They tend to wander about.....obviously!

Cars passing in the only available lane at 70 MPH would tend to skittle a few over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did I really need to post/answer that????????????

That’s the obvious answer, which of course I had thought of. But as I said we passed 11 miles of double parked lorries on the A16 and it really did not seem to be a problem there.

Yes this is England common sense no longer available.

Unfortunately when a death occurs on a UK Road, that road then turns into a crime scene and has to have the equivalent of our CSI's there to take every scrap of evidence that is used for prosecution and answers for the dead persons families. On TV it only takes a few minutes but the reality is, it can take hours as the CSI's have to get there, do their work and take the relevant photo's and remove the bodies and the crashed vehicles. The Police then have to take statements from witnesses. This all takes time unfortunately.

I personally wouldn't have it any other way.

In the UK we have operation stack, M20 is closed to 'normal' trafic and used as a lorry park, in France there is no such organisation, some trucks are allowed to park up on A16, the rest are directed all over the place causing chaos, so well done to the UK for being much better organized.

In the UK the accident scene is accessed for any evidence and most importantly any damage to the surface, the road might then be cleaned or as often happens be torn up and resurfaced in a very short time.
