Which awning to Buy?

Hello, we are new to the motorhome lark. Just purchased a new Benimar Mileo 243 and have a Fiamma 45S canopy fitted. We have had a couple of mini breaks in her and would really like to be able to sit outside when the weather is not being kind and somewhere for Nancy (the Heinz 57 woof) to lie so we don't trip over her in the 'van. We are finding it difficult to understand the lingo surrounding awnings and what fits a caravan and what will fit our motorhome. Anyone got any suggestions and also anyone else out there got a new Benimar?

I take it you want an enclosed, caravan-type awning, with reasonable wind and weather capability?

We use a lightweight porch-type awning, the top ribbon of which slides into the groove in our Omnistor's main spar extrusion - and the Fiamia 45s appear to have a similar groove. The porch awning we bought (at a Show) only cost about £70 and does the job very well. You can get bigger ones, up to a full scale caravan-type awning if you want one. The lightweight material they are made of makes them much easier to erect and pack away than a traditional caravan-type awning and therefore suitable for use with a MH, although it still needs a dozen or so tent pegs to nail it down.

You can get "safari room" kits for roll out awnings and we inherited one with a used MH we bought. Too much of a performance and too flimsy for worthwhile weather protection and we only tried putting it up once.

Benimar seem to be the only Continental manufacturer that can be bothered to place the habitation door on the correct side for the UK, good on them !

If you add a 'Safari room' to your 'roll out' awning, you will be unable to move your van without dismantling it all again! Think: filling/emptying water tanks, just going out to the shops, or for the day.

If you really NEED a fixed awning, why not

get a 'drive away' awning, that fixes to the van, but is basically 'stand alone'. Much more flexible.

We are waiting for our 2016 model Benimar 202 to arrive should be next month.

If you decide on the Safari room option then Obelink http://www.obelink.co.uk/awnings-canopies/fiamma-omnistor-canopies.html#ty%3Bpagination_contents%3B%2Fawnings-canopies%2Ffiamma-omnistor-canopies-page-3.html have some front and side panels from their Mobiel range on sale.

Yes we looked at the font and side panel option but thought it looked rather fiddly to put up. May be a drive away is what we want. Hope you like your Benimar as much as we do. If it comes with the table that does every move except come off, let me know how you get on with it.
