Motorway tolls in Portugal are not expensive and save a great deal of time. I use a mixture of toll and non toll but rarely spend more than €20 on tolls. The non toll roads can be a bit humpty bumpy and they are suffering from HGV traffic and little repair work. Just go steady and they are OK.
