Uncle Bulgaria
We are off to Portugal and Spain shortly and would like to spend a few days in Madrid. Do forum contributors have any recommendations for a reasonable campsite with bus or metro connection to Madrid we could use as a base. Suggestions most appreciated. PJay
ARANJUEZ Camping International (ACSI no 2773) is south of Madrid. Lovely town within walking distance through a large garden area. The town has train to Madrid. Camp site was a bit run down when we stayed about 3 years ago, but the convenience of a flat easy walk to town, was worth the stay. (We did not take the train) It is also 40 kms from Toledo. Site is open all year PJay
flyboyprowler
We have stayed at La Cabrera twice, north east of Madrid, the site is fair, convenient for the village, and open all year. Apparently 30 mins from Madrid, but not sure if there is public transport in to the city. Very convenient for the motorway, and about 5 hours from the ferries. http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/spain/madrid/madrid/la-cabrera/campsite-pico-de-la-miel-106628/

Shop & bar onsite but very good restaurants in town at reasonable prices Have fun Mike

Mike88
The site at Aranjuez is excellent and you can catch the train or bus into Madrid. If you are over 60 you can also enter the Palace for free as long as you have your passport to prove age. The site is located in the Palace grounds. I have stayed there more than 10 times and am surprised about the run down comment.
Bojitoes
Hi We stopped at Aranjuez a couple of weeks ago, no different from when we first stayed their 5 years ago. Only drawback is that they are doing some maintenance work in the park which means you cannot access the park, canal boat museum and town by walking across the bridge and through the park- you have to walk around the road. people who know he site will know what I mean! Still a great site but we have never tried el Escorial which is nearer to Madrid and in ACSI book B
Uncle Bulgaria
Many thanks to all those who gave advice on stop-overs in/near Madrid. Just an update. We stayed at Camping Osuna which proved very convenient for our purposes as it was easy to get to the airport. Camping Osuna was fine for the purpose - the facilities were perfectly adequate and the site staff were very helpful. We also stayed at the Aranjuez and El Escorial sites during our trip. Both are a higher standard than Osuna but some distance from Madrid. The motorway system around Madrid is amazing and the underground motorway that passes more or less under the centre of Madrid was real eye-opener and got us from one side of the city to the other in a matter of minutes. Naturally sat-nav was of no assistance underground but the lane and exit signage was clear.
