Wingpete
Is it true that the snow stays longer in the valleys than on the mountain tops ? Must make travelling higher up the mountains better than struggling on ice.
flicka
Not so Wingpete. You can still get snow at altitude in summer, whilst the valleys have been clear. for weeks. Valleys & Mountains with a northern aspect do tend to hold the snow longer as they get less sun that those with a southern aspect. Occasionally in winter you can get inverse weather conditions, when a pocket of cold air is trapped in the Valley bottom. usually by heavy cloud, whilst the higher up the mountains you can be in beautiful clear skies & sunshine.
