RogerC
pepe63 - 2017-11-14 12:42 PM(not really a Brexit specific post but...)Re: Unemployment figuresWhilst it is obviously better that they go down, rather than up, without also quoting what "type" of jobs it is that are supposedly being created, and what levels of benefits these workers are still needing to claim in order to survive, the figures themselves are pretty meaningless..In the 80s (the period being compared with above),the chances are, to be "employed" would have meant having a steady, permanent job, with sick and holiday pay etc.and earning a wage that someone could live off.Nowadays it seems just a likely as this "job" will involve driving a deliver van on a self employed hire & fire basis, earning pence-per parcel or working for some temp' agency or getting paid minimum wage in some coffee shop or nail bar. Resulting in the worker still claiming (in-work) benefits to make ends meet....If these same employment conditions, had been on place 30-40 years ago, I doubt very much whether some one here would be in the position they are now. (ie Home owners, with money to shell out on 50-60-70k MHs?).. :-S Around here, like a lot of areas, we used to have large factories employing many hundreds of blokes in well paid engineering rolls...Now, those factories have been replaced by a supermarket and a housing estate. The components that these factories produced are still required..they are probably just made abroad.. :-S Agreed statistics in isolation are sometimes meaningless. However as time marches onwards things change, sometimes for the better others for the worse. Similarly the reporting of figures from databases changes as time goes on and reporting methodology alters to reflect that, which those with influence over said figures, want to demonstrate. It has ever been thus.........manipulation of statistics. Therefore how things 'were' years/decades ago is of little relevance to the figures shown today. Everything is different, things move on, employment situations change, no more jobs for life, wages change, house prices, house ownership etc....everything is in a state of permanent flux. Therefore one can only accept the figures one sees today as a reflection of the current state of affairs despite the fact that, as has always been the case, there are questions over their accuracy and relevance. The same Bremoaner previously said the prospects were poor, and was dismissed. They now say it is "not as bleak", and apparently we should all rejoice. Why? Both emanate from the same discredited source. If the source is discredited, it is discredited, no?

thebishbus
Of course there is a simple answer to the Irish border problem, after all Ireland is part of THE BRITISH ISLES . Just suggest that they leave the failing EU and rejoin the UK, and share in our future prosperity and dominant trading success after Brexit. (lol) (lol) . Brian B.
