Catalan Declares UDI

We haven't heard much yet from the other half of Catalonia that live in what is currently France, and then, of course, the Basques are presumably watching how things turn out . It does make you wonder about some of the many other people throughout the EU who will watching and awaiting the outcome, and perhaps wondering how it might influence them.

An illegal 'referendum' and unconstitutional so this is not going to end well for Catalans at all. A number of top officials including the Catalan government have been summarily dismissed. UK government have said they will not recognise it though Wales will......perhaps they are looking for a trading partner!

Catalan banking began shifting their business out earlier this month once it became politically unstable. The partying will be shortlived once they realise they voted to jump off a cliff without a parachute. Hhmm......that sounds familiar.

How strange, how weird you are. What has any of your ranting got to do with supporting the Catalans against their oppressor?? You do need serious couselling, but probably you're too far gone, it would be kinder to refer you to Switzerland for permanent help .

From the man who posts about getting a cheap flight to go to a 'decent' demo and a bloke who started a previous thread by attempting to make a joke about the California fires while folk were dying ... Go figure

I don't think the Spanish Government have played this well and relying on a Constitution which says Spain is indivisible (for ever) is clearly fanciful because history tells us that there is nothing absolute or permanent about sovereignty and it can change as circumstances change.  The heavy handed suppression of the Catalan Government's attempt to hold a referendum seems to me likely to prove to be a mistake.

However just because a bunch of people in a region feel they would be better off doing their own thing and they succeed in a populist move to capture the moment of a low turnout referendum and force their agenda doesn't amount to the assertion of anything like fundamental democratic rights.  Maybe it's just a bunch of people grabbing the chance to take more power and keep back some taxes.

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

The low turn out was due to the heavy handed intervention of the Spanish police preventing people from voting :-| ........

Plus many would not vote, because they recognised that the referendum was illegal, so participating broke Spanish law.

But, they didn't make the referendum illegal, it was illegal under their constitution. It has nothing to with people being entitled to vote, just with upholding a constitution that even more people had already voted to adopt in 1978, through a referendum, with 91.8% in favour overall (95.15% in Catalonia).

But you're right that neither forcing the referendum, nor the reaction to it by the Spanish government, has done anything to solve the problem. Unthinking hotheads on both sides have inflamed the situation through foolish misjudgements. So, now they have a made mess, but just may have learned a lesson. Time will tell.

Dave, they voted for it in 1978 by 95.15%, on a high turnout. I'll accept that was 40 years ago, but it wasn't imposed on them, they welcomed it with open arms. But, that's referendums for you!

See now why I argue that if policy is to be set by referendums, you have to have further referendums in case folk change their minds? Times change, and with them people's opinions. Nothing is forever, and some things have shorter shelf-lives than others.

Puigdemont seems to believe "his" country will be a successful EU member state. It's obviously escaped him the EU cannot recognise an illegal state. Catalans don't want to be part of Spain but want EU membership which they could only apply for if Spain agreed to re-write their constitution allowing them a legal vote. Only then could they apply for EU membership

Puigdemont and his ministers will be locked up for sedition at this rate. They haven't thought this through very well at all.

Hilarious seeing Brexiteers having wet dreams over an illegal ballot.

The National Day of Catalonia is Sept 11 and it commemorates the day in 1714 when they were defeated, and became part of Spain. That says it all about the victim mentality.

They are entitled to change their minds ... After all our own Brian says it's OK for us to change ours every other year

It’s only taking back control when we do it, Britain tells Catalonia

Theresa May not recognising Catalan independence

Some hours after the Catalan regional parliament declared independence, Britain has reminded the region that it’s only taking back control when we do it.

“Look, it’s all very well to take back control against a distant and unpopular government if you’re British,” said a Downing Street spokesperson.

“But if another country does it then it’s reckless and stupid and we can’t possibly condone it, as such we will not be recognising an independent state of Catalonia.”

Comedy Foreign Secretary and overweight clown act Boris Johnson was quick to condemn the Catalan declaration.

“Ah yes. Well. You see, whilst the triumphant wind of independence has swept through our great nation, in Spain that wind has become the foul stench of rebellion and consequently we oppose it wholeheartedly,” he said, whilst simultaneously breaking wind and belching.

“I mean, it’s not like they’re going to give £350m to their health service, or stop millions of imaginary immigrants rampaging through Catalonia sponging benefits and trying to ban Christmas, or make a concerted effort to preserve their bendy bananas, is it?

“No. So they can all get back to work and do as they’re told, then.”

“Can I be Prime Minister yet?” He added, before pretending to go for a run.

It is currently unknown whether or not Catalonia will seek to retain close ties with Spain whilst simultaneously briefing to the press that Spanish Government is full of mendacious liars who smell of garlic.

But, frankly, nothing would be a surprise anymore.
