Servicing

Hi, Our Fiat Ducato is coming up to it's three year birthday but because of circumstances we've only done a total of about 8000 miles.

We had the van serviced in years one and two by our dealer to the recommended servicing schedule. I know Fiat say it doesn't need doing in year one but we had it done.

My question is, although Fiat call for a full service in year three, with such low mileage, is this really necessary? Or would oil change and filter plus good visual check suffice, done by the dealer of course?

According to the service schedule in the vehicle handbook, Fiat service requirements are set at 2 year intervals on a time basis, but sooner if the maximum mileages have been reached prior to the time elapsed. So, there is no 3 year service mandated, but the oil change requirements are not specifically aligned to the 2 year servicing schedule either. The handbook states that "The actual interval for changing the oil and replacing the engine oil filter depends on the car usage conditions and is signalled by the warning light or message (if present) on the instrument panel and must never exceed 2 years. If the vehicle is driven mainly in towns change engine oil and oil filter every 12 months".

It also suggests more frequent oil and filter changes for operating conditions including long periods of inactivity. Iveco, who use the same engine, indicate that this includes vehicles which are driven less than 12,500 miles in a year or not used for a period of more than 2 months.

I would suggest an annual oil and filter change plus a visual inspection of other wearable components in your circumstances, with full servicing every 2 years according to the Fiat schedule.

Brake fluid ? Air con gas pressure check ? And if you have an Alko chassis, maybe lube the tube ?

The first two should be covered by the full bi-annual service schedule for the base vehicle. We're talking here about an intermediate service for a low-mileage vehicle for which, as long as it is being service bi-annually according to the manufacturer's schedule, an oil and filter change plus visual checks on the condition of other wearable items should be sufficient. Unless the visual checks indicate a problem requiring rectification, which is of course the purpose of them.
