Are side marker lights part of the MOT ?

Just doing the rounds and see that the yellow marker lights are not working by the cab doors, the mid and rear yellows are fine.

They appear to be LEDs, unlike the rest of the rear and front markers which are bulbs.

Edit Maybe a w3w bulb, . I need to take a look!

Side marker lights were discussed in this 2014 forum thread

http://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Hints-and-Tips/side-marker-lights-running-lights/36674/

Side-marker lights become mandatory when a vehicle exceeds a certain length, but the MOT Inspection Manual seems to indicate that checking the operation of such lights is not part of the MOT test.

Front and rear postion lamps are covered in Section 1.1 of the Manual

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/m4s01000101.htm

but front and rear position lamps are not the same as side-marker lamps and the Manual instructs that “Additional or optional lamps are not included in the inspection”.

(It has to be said that, if an MOT-tester sees a motorhome with two out of six side-marker lamps not illuminating, the tester may well not be happy about this and may not take kindly to the motorhome’s owner arguing that it’s irrelevant as to how many of the lamps illuminate as those lamps are not included within the testing procedure.)

Thanks for the links, I thought it was that one but on closer inspection is summat else.

The marker is a sealed unit with two LEDs, with three mm of water in it. (So much for the "sealed" bit ! ) not helped by it being mounted upside down with the connecting wire at the top, so water could run in.

Drilled a couple of holes to let the water out, and investigated a couple of rather corroded connectors and now have a faint glow ( LEDs and pride) .

It might improve as the inside dries out, but probably not, but it did have a couple of flashes of brilliance!

There is no dashboard failure light at present. So off to scour the Internet to see if I can find a replacement. Wire it in and THEN find a build failure light come up on the dashboard. *-)

An example of the oval amber Jokon-made side-marker lamps fitted to my 2015 Rapido is advertised here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/1-Jokon-Amber-LED-Side-Marker-Lamp-to-Fit-ROLLERTEAM-Pegaso-a-Class-Motorhomes/518759504

As will be seen, the cable enters centrally at the lamp’s rear and (as the cable-entry is ‘encapsulated’) water should not get in - but from your description this may well not be the side-marker lamp fitted to your 2010 Rapido.

Your lamps’ maker’s name will probably be moulded into the lamp’s outer surface.

If your lamps are LED-type, it’s likely that their failure will not result in a dashboard warning.

Never ask a question, if you do not want to know what the answer might be be. So I didn't.

Rapido passed its Mot, with no mention of a rather dull side marker light. However thanks to all who responded and put me on the right track I found the side light to be a Jokon marker light , now on order.

If the link works on my cut n paste iPad.

One did thing that did surprise me was the introduction on a diesel smoke test that is basically reving the engine to peak revs four or five times. I had to fill in a disclaimer in case bits fell off ! The garage said that one non serviced diesel it mot'ed , threw its cam belt. Ouch !

Whether that was just this Mot station , or now the new anti diesel normal, I leave others to comment.

Some years ago I had a van on which only one of the two high level marker lights worked and after much investigation and head scratching the fault seemed to be a lost contact somewhere hidden away in the bodywork.

I spoke to the MOT garage pre test and was told that if there were lights fitted then they both had to work at identical light levels, no exceptions.

However, if they were only reflectors then they could not be expected to work as lights and as the van was under the size for compulsory marker lights I removed the bulbs, disconnected the cables and fitted plain silver reflective discs (aluminium foil) inside the bulbless lights and it passed OK.

But that was some years ago and rules change?

I don’t think the MOT-test regulations have changed regarding high-level marker-lighting requirements.

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/m4s01000101.htm

The exhaust emissions MOT-test procedure for diesel motors is described in the 4 pages beginning here

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/m4s07000402.htm

(The MOT-test regulations will alter significantly from 20 May 2018.)
