Travel insurance

This year we did a search advised by Martin's Money Tips.

Our previous insurer had added £180 (as my wife takes more than two pills for hypertension) on top of the £120 premium for a year world wide.

By phoning around we found an identical offer for the same amount without the premium.

When the papers arrived it was the same company!

So it's worth persevering.

Yes did phone them rupert123 - £641.11 with a maximum of 65 days so I asked if I could have two 65 day policies running one after the other but no joy.

David

Something wrong here! NFOP is a fixed price irrespective, so don't understand your quote of £641.11, the fixed price we paid was £275 this year for the both of us!

Bas

Hi Basil,

I think the initial quote was for something like £275 but as this is also a fixed period of 65 days they put me through to their insurer -CFIS - who would do the 110 days we were looking for but after the medical screening this was £641.11 - just for the wife! I didn't continue on to get the additional premium for me.

As rupert123 says - his premium with NFOP was £295 so there does appear to be a difference in premiums for members.

Will be trying two of the specialist comparison sites suggested in Martin's Money Saving Tips and, if they are not on there, some more companies like Saga, Insure and Go and Avanti - although have read a couple of horror stories about the latter.

So, I checked my pulse and then my wife's after getting the most recent quotes and we are definitely still alive but maybe the doctors are not telling us something. Saga would like to extract £2200+ To cover us for a 110 day winter trip to Spain next winter and All Clear Travel couldn't complete an online quote as the website automatically refuses to quote when the premium exceeds £4000! The man explained after I rang to see what the problem was.

I'm beginning to think that it may be wiser to put the money towards a prepaid funeral plan.

I am several years off 70, so will be travelling as much as I can before I reach 70.

Seems a bit crazy but as these prices, have you considered after 60 days getting a cheap flight home, stay overnight in Luton/Stanstead and fly back the next day? (so starting another 60 days). Are there any clauses in the insurance policy to prevent this?

Hi, yes - in fact I asked NFOP if I could buy two 65 day policies and run them back to back but that didn't go down well. It would certainly be a good idea to do as you suggest and return home (perhaps for Christmas and or new year) but as my wife doesn't like flying (or ferries for that matter) we use the tunnel for our trip away so it would be another two long drives back to Yorkshire and return to Spain. I suspect the insurance companies wouldn't be too happy at the single overnight break between policies.

We are 65 and 72 and I'm not too sure that the magic figure of 70 is entirely the problem here. I'm also fairly sure there are a large number of us who venture south for the winter (either in Motorhomes/caravans or in apartments) and that a goodly proportion will have pre-existing medical conditions. So I'm intrigued to know how many find it difficult to get adequate insurance for up to 180 days in some cases and how many just don't bother.

Although we have ongoing medical issues they are not things that prevent us from driving all the way to southern Spain and, in fact, are helped by the climate once there rather than staying at home. From my perience so far it would seem the real problem for us is that the screening is automated and uses scoring that, in cases like ours, indicates quite high risks that simply aren't there but there is no one we can discuss it with. I accept that for the insurance companies it is all about mitigating the risks but if they want to charge such extortionate rates then perhaps, if no claim arises, they could refund 50% of the premium.

But that's not going to happen.

Try Caravan Club covers health and the van . If you take both, cover is for any trip up to 365 days and repatriation of vehicle if necessary. Covers existing medical conditions. You do have to answer several questions but if you are in reasonable health you will be fine. We are in our 70s and had no problems last year. Can’t remember the exact cost but it was definitely less than £400. Have used the service twice for smallish problems with the van (damaged exhaust and fuel leak) and the service was great. They found the garages and made the appointments. This year it covers you if your vehicle breaks down within 48 hours before the start of your holiday.

Hi pottypam,

After avoiding having a heart attack at some of the premiums I have been quoted recently (see above) I am back to thinking seriously about the C&MC policy. They have a single trip, personal policy (already have European breakdown in with the van insurance) that gives 122 days cover. From reading the policy document if neither of us have received medical treatment or are waiting for referral or results etc during the last 3 months then cover will be provided - as long as we are fit to travel of course. This seems eminently sensible and we can truthfully answers no to the initial screening questions so should be eligible without having to declare every minor illness in our lifetimes.

I know your quote was for £400ish but that included your breakdown cover so am hoping ours, when I contact them, to be this or less perhaps. I have heard many favourable reports on the service given when needed too.

We have our travel insurance free through nationwide flex plus. You do have to declare conditions and length of stay and you get charged extra if it is over 30 days. Last time it was £130 for 90 days away and 1 condition I think.

We have the same, at the same price, BOTh over 80. So will stay with them.

It does not pay to start changing insurers once you reach the late 70's. Best to stay put IMO.

The insurers do not OLD people , unless you are prepared to stay with the same company.

I can't see the risks are really more with any one over 80. We all have to die die sometime!

and sadly we have been to funerals of younger people of late One only in 40's no medical history, just dropped down !

Hi pottypam,

Have not approached them yet as I need six clear months from my last treatment before I can answer the initial questions and not need to go on to the additional medical screening. But I should be getting a quote in the next few weeks and, presently, it still looks the best bet.
