Canterbury Park and Ride prices

Have used the wonderful Canterbury P&R motorhome spot for a few years and it is a great facility for us all. In fact have used it 3 times in 2018 so far, in early March it was on the old system so if parked after 16.00hrs it was £4 now for the same time its £7. When did it go up ?. Its still a great place just seems a big increase in price. Its now £3.50 per day no reduction after 4.00pm.Wished more councils would create overnight parking for us as they will make money (Saturday night about 20 vans overnighting, many non UK owners). :-D

I believe the reduced price after 4pm was withdrawn earlier this year when the day rate increased from £3 to £3.50.

As to the ability of other councils to "make money" by providing camping facilities in their car parks, it all depends on the location and whether the car parks are suitable. Few, if any, places have the USP of New Dover Road's location so there has to be another if money is to be made.

We used the Canterbury facility this year, [ May ] it was £3,50 it is up until midnight on day of arrival so if you stay overnight it will cost you double ie £7 . bargain as you can ride the free bus to Canterbury as often as you like too, there is also now an overflow area which is easily accessible.

I have just looked at this on Google maps and there is a height barrier at the entrance, the Google map picture is old so maybe it has changed ?

Yes, it has changed.

The USP of New Dover Road meant it wasn't much of a risk to set it up in the first place.

Colin Perris then used the evidence gained from that experience, plus discussions with interested parties, to introduce more facilities in selected places.

The main factor is that the council has hard evidence to demonstrate that risk of failure is minimised.

Have you ever thought that other councils might have been forward thinking and come to the conclusion that investment in motorhome facilities is not good economics?

For instance, the disappointing example of Guisborough means that Redcar & Cleveland is wary about spending money.

Would motorhomers actually find overnight facilities as attractive in places such as Accrington or Walsall (just as examples)? Attractive enough to persuade councils to invest?

The fact is that demand varies and the case has to be made for individual places.
