Drone chaos at Airport

The Times this morning reports that the technology capable for neutralising a drone attacking an airfield was deployed at Gatwick by the Army when it was loaned to them by a civilian company. Current legislation prevents civilian authorities like airports from using anything which interferes with radio signals (which is necessary to neutralise a drone) and changes to legislation meant to include new provisions of this sort was abandoned by the Department of Transport in early 2018 when staff were redirected to work on Brexit. The Transport Minister, Chris Grayling, is the minister responsible.

The technology in question is said to be capable of detecting and neutralising a drone threatening and airport within 15 seconds. Radar is then used to spot the drone and radio interference is used to disable it. This technology cannot be used by airports until the Government changes the legislation to allow them to.

The arrest of two people near gatwick at 2200 last night was an hour or so after the Airport closed again because of drone activity, so it might have followed an attempt by them to mount another drone incursion of which the launch location was quickly detected.

It sounds like Chris Grayling should be carrying the can.

A 47-year-old man and 54-year-old woman from Crawley arrested. If it's only involving two people, how many damn battery packs did they have for this thing as it was suggested more than one drone had been operating?

It's also to be hoped the drone comes up to the description of "commercial" otherwise all cheap toy drones will be the next thing banned in Britain!

My son bought a high-end hobby drone fro around £1500 which came with three batteries, each giving about 30 mins duration of flight. These things are amazingly clever.

It folds it arms and slips into a satchel, with everything. Very high spec camera and very clever software - including presumably the geofence to prevent flying over forbidden areas. The batteries are rechargeable from a car as well as from mains; I think a charge takes a few hours. It can fly up to 5km from the launch point without loosing touch with the controller - although of course the rule is that you have to keep it within visual range, which will be less.

£1500?? 8-) I've just bought a car for less than that! It's also "very clever"....auto lights, auto wipers, cruise control, climate control, air-con, parking sensors and goodness knows what else (only found out the other day it has auto wipers when the damn things suddenly burst into life!). Mind you it can't fly......though goes like a rocket when the afterburner kicks in! (lol)

The "commercial" type which they've been reporting this is, afaik are used a lot by tv film companies on documentary work to get shots which would be awkward or inaccessible to a camera crew, and also dramatic shots you wouldn't see from the ground.

If this couple are the culprits then perhaps we will soon know more about exactly what equipment they were using. Also what there point was as the only possible i know of is locals objecting to the planned airport expansion.

So yet another major cock up. *-)

Arrested couple released with no charges and no longer suspects who had "co-operated fully" with police inquiries......yet suffered the gross indignity of having their names and photographs splashed all over national media. *-)

Who the hell released their identities? Whoever gave authorisation needs to brought to book.

Since this couples identities were released, social media went into meltdown with wails from the usual SJ warrior mob baying for blood......'public flogging', 'sentence 'em to life' even some dick suggesting 'intentional murder' fgs!

Interestingly all media reports now refer to them as "a couple" and no names.....bit too late for that.
