We lost our little Jack Russel bitch 2 1/2 years ago, so 3 months after we bought a small Cockerpoo at 8 weeks old.

I hadn’t house trained a puppy for a long time, we bought the normal training pads and someone told me about dog training bells.

I bought one off eBay and you hang it over the door handle and every time you take the puppy outside you give the bell a shake.

After a few days we were watching the tv and I said to Pat my wife I’m sure I’ve just heard the bell ring and when I looked our Roxy was sitting by the back door, anyway after this episode she rung the bell every time she wanted to go out and as she got older she rung the bell for devilment.

Our Roxy was toilet trained within 2 weeks and she’s a fantastic small breed of Cockerpoo.

Have a look on EBay for dog training bells as they’re well worth it.

Thank you for that response. A puppy is a must for us as I want the dog to be happy about riding in a basket on our e-bikes and I don't believe this would be terribly easy for an older dog to feel comfortable with. I guess we must all make decisions based on our own needs and how happy any dog might be with our life style. We'll have our dog chipped in Spain in addition to the UK chip. You must be really excited about the prospect of getting your new rescue dog when you get home....alll the best with that. :-D

From our own experiences you will also need to factor in timescales for the pet passport.

After 13 weeks you will need to have your dog (puppy), given a rabies injection, then a wait of 5 -7 days to go back and have a blood test, to ensure that the puppy has built up its immune system.  Then a wait of 30 days before you can take your dog abroad. Prior to this it will also need a tapeworm injection, but this must be between 1 to 5 days prior to travelling.

On return to the uk, provided the rabies injection is still valid, then another tapeworm injection is required, again between 1 to 5 days before you travel back to the UK.

All this information must be recorded in the pet passport

It is very interesting, reading the comments on this subject. Spookily, our little dog is called Harvey and he is a Spanish small rescue dog, with a Spanish chip.and passport. Also, we actually bought our first motorhome for him, as travelling back and forward to Spain in the car, and finding decent dog friendly hotels became a problem. We have now upgraded to a bigger van, and Harvey is a very spoilt dog!!

 

As The dreaded Brexit is still looming, and we don't know what will be happening after or if we leave, I would seriously consider trying to find your little poodle from a breeder in Spain, should one exist, If we then leave the EU your dog will still be able to travel freely, The reported restrictions for pet travel, especially if we leave without a deal, are very restrictive (but not impossible) for pets with a UK chip and passport. Add to that, vets fees and treatments are cheaper in Spain so it is well worth considering.

 

Harvey loves his motorhome and has been travelling without problems for six years now. We haven't overcome the problem of bikes etc. Harvey is a small cairn type terrier and travels well. I am considering a motorbike now, but need to find a suitable dog carrier before we buy!!!

Hi Ainsley, thank you for your good wishes. We, like you travel back and forth to Spain - Barcelona....what about you...where do you head for here....we're in Barcelona at the moment. WWe went on the Kennel Club waiting list for miniture poodle puppies from their registered breeders and on Friday a litter was advertised I contacted the breeder, asked all the right questions re health etc., we chatted on the phone (she was not happy to let her puppy go until we had spoken) and of course, we exchanged e-mails we've now got a beautiful Apricot miniture poodle puppy. We'll collect her just after we get home. We've got a really tight turn around time before we head back here to meet son, wife and grandchildren from the States who are coming for a holiday so I decided that if we wanted a puppy and to come back to Spain early June then I couln't wait until I got home to get the puppy. I'm really busy now choosing everything from the net as we will pick her up a few days after we get home. I would like her to have a Spanish chip and Passport and a UK one but I'm not sure that is permitted (I think it is but I'm not entirely certain). She is being very well socialised in her home there are children and lots of activities. Fingers crossed that she will like to travel. She is in Hitchin in Hertfordshire so she will have quite a distance to travel to her foreveer home which will be good for both of us. I hope you solve the carry problem on the motorbike....I'm sure you will. You could look at bike baskets and a means of securing them on the motorbike....you can buy them for either the front or the rear. or you could fit a pannier carrier at the back and secure a basket to that. Training them to be happy in the basket will take a little while but I suspect Harvey would enjoy it....he sounds like a lovely little chap....hope we run across each other one day when we're down here in the motorhome. We don't usually spend much time in our house when we're in the motorhome we prefer the motorhome :D You enjoy your travelswith Harvey :-D

We have just arrived in eastern Almeria, and our house is in the mountains near Mojacar. 22 degrees today so no complaints, but we had a nightmare trip, thankfully in the car, over the Pyrenees, in heavy snow, taken by the sat nav, instead of through the Somport tunnel!! Our motorhome would never have made it, and frankly the road should have been closed.

 

I would be interested to hear if you are able to have "dual" passports, it would be useful. On a legal note, you will need a harness when the puppy is travelling. It is compulsory in Spain, and frankly sensible in all countries. Harvey got used to his very quickly, and just goes to sleep on his seat-bed when we are moving.

 

Next trip is down the coast to Malaga for a few days, and then in May to Cordoba for the festival of patio flowers. Muy bien!!

Sounds like nice winter temperatures there....it's much cooler up here but always sunny :-D We both love your part of Spain it is very beautiful round where your house is....Almeria is very picturesque. Love Malaga too....have a wonderful time. We always cross the border on the coast road either east or west depending on whether we're in the car or the motorhome....we've had some scary experiences crossing the border at other points at this time of year so now we stick to the coastal crossings....so far so good...though we have to face the journey back in about 2 weeks time - mid February we shall see :-S I intend crate training our puppy though in a non metal 'crate' so that she is always safe and comfy :-) We spent last winter down in your neck of the woods from November to February and really enjoyed it....this year we had to come to the house to sort out some maintenance stuff so for the last few weeks we've had the builders and gardeners in here in Barcelona and then we have a place in Roses on the coast near the French border and there we've also had to have gardeners in to cut euculyptus trees and sort our jungle garden out....so we've had a very busy winter...though we're almost ship shap again fortunately. We find the motorhome is much more fun and relaxing than a house :-S Happy travels down there in the sun :-)

This was meant to be a reply to ThatBry’s post which gives the timescale that has been in place for the last few years, and if we leave with a deal, will hopefully stay in place.

 

I think your timings are out. The wait after the rabies jab before the blood test is 30 days and then it is 3 months before you can travel. This is assuming we leave the EU without a deal. A certificate from an Official Vet dated within 10 days before travel will also be needed. Got our dog’s blood test confirmation yesterday, Will be booking the tunnel for early April today.
