Read that first. If you cross Slovenia via Italy then you can stay away from our motorways quite easily. From Austria it gets a bit more complicated. Otherwise the system is similar and you need a DarsGo box if over 3.5t

In Croatia you pay at toll stations by whatever class you fit in

You do not need a Go Box to travel from Slovenia to Germany through Austria. Last year I organised a rally in Bled for 55 members of Carthago Owners UK and many members travelled south using this route.below I have a map as well but can't post it here but if you PM me your email address I will send it to you. You van also travel through Slovenia avoiding toll roads

Set sat nav for No Tolls ~ No Period Charge

Route 1

We travelled from Munich in Germany to Saltzburg, leaving the A8 just before entering Austria. Take exit 115-Bad Reichenhall towards Bad Reichenhall/Berchtesgaden/Freilassing/Piding. We turned right at end of slip road, onto route 20 and followed this road for about a mile before turning onto route 21 which becomes Route 1, all the way into Saltzburg till you come to a T Junction where you turn right and sat nav will take you out of Saltzburg onto the 159 and south towards Villach.

BEWARE ~ Before reaching Saltzburg if your sat nav wants you to turn right after passing under the motorway at a roundabout, do NOT do it. It takes you up onto a single track forest road. I know cause I was there!!

You have to go up and over 3 mountains with the steepest, and shortest, being the last one over the Wurzenpass which coaches use.

Trailers are not allowed over this pass.

We have travelled north twice and south once in our 6 tonne, 3.6m high, 8.8m long van so it can be done safely. Just take your time.

We travelled to Croatia a couple of years ago,the easy way to avoid all that faffing about with go boxes etc.

Is to set satnav to avoid toll roads, you see much more of the countryside,a really lovely journey.

Might see you on the road we are planning another trip there, leaving early September.

If you have time late September and October on the way back visit the Mosel region, plenty of wine tasting to be had.

Happy travelling

Our last trip to Croatia was in June 2018. We travelled by car not motorhome. I set our gps to avoid tolls when we left Italy then to Slovenia and on to Croatia. Only time the gps was inaccurate was around Koper as the road nominated had been converted to a bike only road. An alternate route was not difficult to find. Enjoy your trip the Croatian coast is a delight. Cheers,

The route I last used to avoid Go-Box charges in Austria was via the Fern and old Brenner pass, the B182 from Innsbruck to Brenner.. We used the App Polarsteps to record the routes of both our outward and homeward journeys. The old Brenner Pass is closed to trucks and caravans but not motorhomes unless you a towing a trailer. Details of the outward journey can be viewed at:

and the homeward at:
