St Georges Day a Public Holiday

enodreven

Recommended Posts

I have just been sent this email which seems like a good idea ?

Everyone,

We have a real chance to make April

23rd, our nations day a bank

holiday. If you are in agreement then please vote and also please

send this to as many people as possible as it's all about numbers.

There is a chance the public can make

St Georges Day a public

holiday (After this year) Click on the link below to vote, the site

needs at least 500,000 votes for the government to take it

seriously and give us another holiday, and I know you are up for that!

Pass the address on to whoever you can

It's a nice idea in theory but there's one huge flaw in the argument. St. George is not the patron saint of 'our nation' but of England.

Our nation of course consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Are we also to have St. David's Day, St. Andrew's Day and St. Patrick's Day as bank holidays?

If each of our four separate countries were to have a bank holiday for its own patron saint it would be very disruptive. For another four days of the year, banks and companies will not be able to do business with customers and firms in other parts of the country, which may be shut down.

A nice idea, but who will PAY for this day off ? Would be far better to scrape the union based idea of May 1st and swop it for St Georges day, but with the present immigration policys half the country do not know who St George was ! chas

It's actually 'Iechyd da' to be correct and it broadly means 'cheers', and is the only bit of Welsh that I know.

Cheers one and all

No good trying to blind me with science Richard. My Granny was a Wesh speaker, and phrases such as busio stopio and shiftio ****sio come naturally to me. My Grandad came from Dumbarton so i,m well up on the Gaelic side of things as well which is why i,m the only one in the house that can understand and appreciate the subtle humour of the great Rab C Nesbitt.

Yes Howie I too liked the great Rab C.

Being a mere sassenach (is that how you spell it?) I don't know much about Gaelic but I seem to function better with some Garlic as that does tends to ward off evil spirits.

Shame it don't work on evil minded people init!

No Howie I don't mean you - or anyone else on here - just in case someone else gets the hump.

Fancy a**sio being bleeped. No escape as this forum operates a multi lingual censorship it seems. Of to the shopio now (see how easy it is to learn our indigenous languages Richard. All it takes is a bit of time and effort) so enjoy your special day.

I think you'll find that St Patrick's day is a BH, and just to keep the religious bigots happy - 12th July is as well.

The rest of the UK should join in, we have less public hols than anywhere else in Europe. Not that St George is a particularly good choice imo -

Who can be nominated to be the Patron Saint of Motorcaravaners ?

I would suggest the late John Hunt. What about a rally in his memory. chas

A well deserved honour Chas, although he,ll have to join the queue i,m afraid.

Alexius.

Anthony of Padua.

Balthasar.

Bona of Pisa.

Botulph.

Brendon the Navigator.

Bridged of Ireland.

Casper.

Christopher.

Francis da Poala.

Gertrude of Nivelles.

Gertrude the Great.

Infant Jesus of Prague.

Joseph.

Julian the Hospitaller.

Martha.

Mary, Bessed Virgin.

Mary Euphrasia.

Melchior.

Nicholas of Myra.

Nino de Atocha.

Raphael the Archangel.

Sebastion of Aparicio.

Valentine.

St. Howie has a certain ring to it, but seeing that you have to be dead before Sainthood can be granted i,m not sure if I qualify at the moment.
